You do realize 8 billion usd are spent on soda via snap every year right? We have a sick twisted corporate oligarchy with its fingers in the food supply pushing cheap junk food on everyone. Everyone knows Whole Foods cost more than processed food, but an astronomical amount of SNAP is spent on food that should simply not be funded. Beans and rice and bread are far cheaper than any junk food you can find, and when people are being brainwashed by big food corporations there needs to be an external incentive (no SNAP funding) that pushed people away from junk food.

Honestly, I wish there’s was a 50% sin tax on all food above a certain calories/gram or processed or whatever criteria you want that would be reinvested into subsidies for healthy food on SNAP. But that would never happen because Wall Street makes too much money off of fat Americans.

Eggs were historically a very cheap source of protein and have a very diverse nutrient profile because they are designed to grow an animal from scratch. I recall in 2019 doing the math for protein/dollar and things like chicken breast, whey protein, eggs, and milk came out on top, but that was because eggs were 80 cents per dozen. It’s like if chicken breast went from its 2019 price of 1.99 to $15-20 a pound, or milk for $15 a gallon or whey for $100+ a bag. I used to consistently eat 3 eggs every morning because I was broke and eggs + rice + siracha was like a 50 cent breakfast, now that same breakfast would be approaching 3 dollars.

People are so upset because of the 10x effective price increase, just imagine a 10x in any other price in only 5 years. Rent, education, electricity

Making R1 open source really makes it such a big FU to all the grifters asking for billions for AI in the us. Especially funny because high-flyer is a hedge fund firm themselves. The ai race should only be determined by what you do with it, not protecting how much IP you hoovered up and are now trying to cry about it being copied by others.

I voted for Harris walz, but I think a lot of this is the fault of Biden for trying to run for reelection and sticking it out until July. I live in the south and I think the lack of a primary reallly hurt the ticket because a sizable portion of the people I’ve talked to felt like she was appointed instead of being elected, which is a bad move when public trust in our institutions is already at an all time low.

Yeah that photo of the trail looks so dang good, makes it suck to have to work on Monday.

Is there a number on the break even point where it’s better for the environment to buy a new EV than to keep driving an old ICE vehicle? I bike most days when I don’t need to buy more than a backpack of groceries or go more than 3 miles. Surely when you consider the carbon cost of refining materials and constructing a whole new vehicle, it doesn’t make sense in most situations for people who drive less than 30 minutes a day on average. This is of course assuming you have a current vehicle, new vehicles should have to be hybrid/EV in the modern era.

Still more of a sport than esports

Yeah a lot of people love their car or truck more than anything else in life. Which is crazy when you think there’s such a high risk of it being totaled at a moments notice with normal usage.

I bought a Hisense and it had the option during setup to disable most smart features and leave it in “basic mode”. I was already going to put an Apple TV in it so I just left it there and I’ve been happy. Only thing a tv needs is settings and the ability to change inputs.

How is it different from writing how you feel in a journal at night?

Yeah I’m in the same bucket. Once libreddit dies, I’m off Reddit for good. I still like to browse some of the communities that aren’t fully established on Lemmy yet there and libreddit is he only thing that makes it palatable. I can’t stand reddit deciding to only show you the first comment in a chain of 30 and asking you to log in to see the rest.

I’m really looking into building a NAS for my Mac. I got the 256gb MacBook Air and currently back up the machine using a nvme drive over type c but having to plug it in to access video files and backup every couple days is not ideal. With how cheap physical storage is now, a NAS seems like a good solution. Does anyone have a NAS at home and can share the software and hardware needed to make it run smoothly?

It's one of my favorite activities. I know they might not grow everywhere but every time I find a nice patch of white-dwarf clover I love just spending 5 minutes leaning over and looking through it. You can almost always find a 4-leaf one with some patience and a little luck, and it's such a calming task that gets you looking at nature in the middle of your day.
