Even in a country where a culture of overwork permeates a wide range of businesses, the anime industry is notorious for the grueling hours that workers put in. Animators in their early 20s earn less than 2 million yen ($12,948) a year, according to industry data, compared with over 3 million yen for a person of a similar age living in Tokyo. That’s less than half of what US entry-level animators earn, websites like Glassdoor show. Creative workers also complain of late and uncertain payments.

Some, though, sense change is afoot. A working group for the United Nations Human Rights Council last year called out Japan’s anime industry for its poor treatment of workers, along with cases of sexual violence and harassment in the country’s entertainment business. In a May report, the group referred to “excessively long working hours” and low pay, as well as a disregard for creative workers’ intellectual property rights.

Talk about frustrating to infuriating. They need to unionize like hell, and if the government is genuinely looking at addressing this, this would be a good time to do so. A government aiming to save face may be more amenable to unionization efforts than at other times.

Honestly pleasantly surprised to see encouraging worker activism towards the end of the article as well.

Q: What’s so great about this 0.49.0, anyway? Is there a changelog?
A: 0.49.0 will be our largest release yet, having been in development since August 2022! We are preparing a comprehensive changelog and a release video for the full release announcement.

Historically, RC builds didn’t get them, as they are subject to change. You can, however, get a decent idea of what 0.49.0 will include by glossing through the CHANGELOG.md file included in some RC packages and available on our source code repository. While it’s far from covering everything, it’s plenty – take a look!

Good to see this at the top, as I was wondering what may be notable about this version.

Not that I know what the best clothing to approach a volcano would be either, but uh...Sneakers and light clothing wouldn't be at the top of my list. Also wouldn't be at the top of my list for visiting a mountain when it's cold for that matter.

The energy infrastructure switch is more drawn out than some may like, but it's still good to see plans towards renewable energy and not discounting nuclear energy as an option alongside them.

It sadly sounds like a dreadful end coming to this old city, at least without some significant aid and intervention. However it's hard to say how much any of that may help without global coordination to mitigate the greater climate crisis.

Remembered there was documentation, and understood it a little better this time around!

TwoLineJoy explainerdecided to try out this idea of tagging posts here with potential community idea to test the waters and put to practice using General as an incubator/launchpad for other communities.

The Trump administration has not fully complied with a court order pausing the freezing of foreign assistance grants and contracts, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Amir Ali last week ordered the administration to allow the disbursement of U.S. foreign assistance after hearing claims from federal contractors challenging an executive order signed by President Donald Trump pausing nearly all foreign assistance.

I still don't know what I think of it after recently finishing it, but it was...Interesting.

It takes on the usual UFO narrative of someone being abducted and returned but not being able to entirely recall what happened. However it then jumps ahead to their adulthood and how that experience is having a continued impact on their relationships.

personal interpretation asideThen it spins into reuniting with a childhood friend who as the show goes on I like to think was really their unrealized girlfriend, so the show almost reads as lesbian paranormal investigators.

A nice rock tune with some chill vocals.

Tourists climbing Sicily's Mount Etna volcano at night in sneakers and light clothing to get a close-up view of an ongoing eruption may be risking their lives, rescuers warned on Friday.

Europe's highest and most active volcano erupted in spectacular fashion last week, lighting up the night sky with explosions and bright red molten lava.

For centuries, poets, scholars and theologians have flocked to Chinguetti, a trans-Saharan trading post home to more than a dozen libraries containing thousands of manuscripts.

But it now stands on the brink of oblivion. Shifting sands have long covered the ancient city’s 8th-century core and are encroaching on neighborhoods at its current edge. Residents say the desert is their destiny.

Swedish authorities said on Friday they were investigating a damaged cable that was discovered in the Baltic Sea, the latest in a string of recent incidents of ruptured undersea cables that have heightened fears of Russian sabotage and spying in the region.

The breakage was found on a cable that runs between Germany and Finland off the island of Gotland, south of Stockholm, in the Swedish economic zone, the news agency TT reported Friday. The Coast Guard was responding to the site.

South Korea finalised on Friday a new energy mix plan that envisages the construction of two new large-scale nuclear power plants and one small nuclear power reactor by 2038, the country's industry ministry said.

The plan also aims to secure renewable energy accounting for an average of 7 gigawatts (GW) per year by 2030, the ministry said in a statement.

I haven't noticed any major issues with it in my usage, so...Maybe not? Could always give it a try and if it doesn't seem to work well, no worries switching back to your other launcher.

A time-traveling puzzle game; find unexpected routes around obstacles as you traverse a ruinous landscape. Use both growth and decay to your advantage. Strategically position foliage in the past. Winner of the 2023 game jam.

As it's from a game jam, there's a little roughness in some of the puzzle design (I had to look up the final parts), but overall it's an interesting and impressive game. If you're looking for a relaxing mental exercise, it very much nails that feeling.

From their main page:

Overte is an open source virtual worlds and social VR software which enables you to create and share virtual worlds as virtual reality (VR) and desktop experiences. You can create and host your own virtual world, explore other worlds, meet and connect with other users, attend or host live VR events, and much more.

In other words, it's more or less an open source approach to VRChat.

For those unfamiliar, it's a fork of KISS launcher.

It's a little more elaborate than KISS, hence the name (I think?), with more widget support and additional screen/desktop views to switch between (empty for background/wallpaper viewing, widget, and search).

After having used KISS awhile, it took some adjusting to, but I've found I really enjoy the blend of KISS features with the ability to display more widgets. If you happen to have an Android tablet and want a different launcher, I think TinyBit's worth considering for a best of both worlds option.
