(The link long "dodgy looking" link could put off some users)

I feel that's not a great way to onboard people, there is too much happening on the page, and too much friction to get to a point where you see content.

I found a way to keep it super simple when referring people to Lemmy. One simple message

" Try out the Reddit alternative called Lemmy https://vger.app/

It also has a mobile app: https://vger.app/settings/install "

This way a user can just start scrolling, and if they want to comment etc. they will be asked to create a account with lemm.ee selected as a default.

This fixes most UX issues with getting onboarded

If you setup streamio it's literally as easy as using Netflix. And it has everything, it's extremely rare that i find anything that i can't watch

On some services like Amazon Prime you can rent a movie for 24h (or something like that)

You can also "buy" movies, but I've seen so many times that they take away the movie that you "bought" and you don't get a refund.

I'm the OP of one of the posts that blew up about UX.

This is great news, I will look into building something like join-lemmy/onboarding that could guide users, or improving join-lemmy

It doesn't keep dumb people out, it keeps non tech savvy people out, I've seen extremely immature people on here

I'd pick a mature user over a tech savvy user any day. Ideally they'd be both

Small things like ‘Auto expand media’ being set to true, can have a huge impact on user retention rate.

The vast majority of people never open or change default settings in the social media they use.

When they try out Lemmy etc., and the defaults aren’t great a lot of them will have a bad User Experience and leave.

I’m a IT professional, and joined Lemmy a few months ago, the UX sucked, most of that could have been fixed by having good defaults in place.

I powered through, but I won’t recommend Lemmy to many of my friends or family because I know they will give up due to too much friction in finding the right settings and how things work.

For the Fediverse to succeed focus needs to be put on giving people a very smooth UX from first opening a app or page, to finding enjoyment seeing and engaging with content.

What is your opinion of Joseph Stalin? (lemm.ee)
 

I believe in socialism, but I feel Stalin shouldn't be idolised due to things like the Gulag.

I would like more people to become socialist, but I feel not condemning Stalin doesn't help the cause.

I've tried to have a constructieve conversation about this, but I basically get angry comments calling me stupid for believing he did atrocious things.

That's not how you win someone over.

I struggle to believe the Gulag etc. Never happened, and if it happened I firmly believe Stalin should be condemned.
