Still important to track how much of a buffer we can get before the end of the month.

I don't know how successful it'll be, but hey it's close to the one million signatures needed and we're close to the finish line. Might as well sign it, literally just a finger wag away for any EU citizen.

"Stop Killing Games" is a consumer movement started to challenge the legality of publishers destroying video games they have sold to customers. An increasing number of video games are sold effectively as goods - with no stated expiration date - but designed to be completely unplayable as soon as support from the publisher ends. This practice is a form of planned obsolescence and is not only detrimental to customers, but makes preservation effectively impossible. Furthermore, the legality of this practice is largely untested in many countries.

Over the past year, we have succesfully escalated complaints on this problem to consumer agencies in France, Germany, and Australia, and have brought forth petitions for new law on this problem to various countries. A list of the actions taken to date can be viewed here. As of 2025, most consumer action on this matter has concluded and we are awaiting decisions on it from several governments. However, there are a few remaining avenues left where people can participate if they are eligible:

European Citizens' Initiative This is the most powerful option at our disposal, but it requires a massive number of signatures from citizens of EU countries in order to pass. If we can pass the signature threshold, there is a very strong chance that the European Commission will pass new law that will both protect consumer rights to retain video games that they have purchased and advance preservation efforts massively.

Petition to UK Government UK citizens and residents can sign a petition where, if it passes 100,000 signatures, new law will be considered to be brought before Parliament for debate to prohibit publishers from destroying video games that customers have already paid for.

Please read the web link and FAQ for more information.

Edit2: As of third of July we've achieved the minimum amount of 1 million signatures! But organizers recommend as many signatures as possible to cover for possible invalidations (1.5M would be ideal). If you have not yet signed, you can still help!

Onto the post.

Yarr citizens of the high seas! The Stop Killing Games movement is still ongoing and we've recently had a second wind. It's within reach!

We're all lovers of media in here, and games currently have no safeguard that guarantees that they won't be locked down long after being released and abandoned. If crackers help us, they can still be played long into the future, but many times there isn't such a possibility, specially in multiplayer games.

This initiative seeks to change that by mainly:

  • Disallowing planned obsolesce in paid video games. (Ex: By disallowing phone-home based DRM after the game reaches end of life. Like in Ubisoft's The Crew)
  • Ensuring that paid multiplayer games can still be reasonably played long into the future. (Ex: By releasing relevant server hosting software)

If you didn't sign yet, there is only one month left. Tell your friends too.

Do you live in the EU?

Do you live in the UK?

Do you live elsewhere or would like to know more?

Disclaimer: Reminder post, sort of relevant since piracy movements have much to benefit from this initiative.

Have a fine day!

An increasing number of videogames are sold as goods, but designed to be completely unplayable for everyone as soon as support ends. The legality of this practice is untested worldwide, and many governments do not have clear laws regarding these actions. It is our goal to have authorities examine this behavior and hopefully end it, as it is an assault on both consumer rights and preservation of media. We are pursuing this in two ways:

TL;DR this is an EU petition aimed at making sure that companies are obligated to distribute binaries of the server code of their multiplayer and live service games. Currently, video game companies of online/live service games use a form of SaaSS (Service as a Software Substitute) model where the "game" someone has purchased is simply a license to run the game in only the way the company sees fit (their servers, their platform, their rules). If a company were to go under or simply not run the servers required for the full game to function, then the user is out of luck as they've effectively had the game taken away from them.

This is just another example of why ALL leftists must strive to fight for free software. If we don't consider software which respects your freedom an important endeavor to uphold, then we make ourselves vulnerable for further and further exploitation. If you're reading this, this includes you as well.
