It's a shame! It was actually a good news source with a curated feed not run by Google!

• Artifact app to be shut down, citing a small market opportunity and the need to focus on newer projects.

• App's complexity and operations will be slimmed down, with the removal of the ability to add new comments and posts.

• Existing posts will remain visible, and core news reading capabilities will continue until the end of February.

Makes me sad, i liked the ability to discuss the news on the comments

[–] pineapple_pizza@lemmy.dexlit.xyz 18 points 2 years ago

We're doing that here :)

There were many times someone else’s comment stopped me before I read the Johnathon Turley opinion piece Artifact kept trying to throw at me.

[–] cyd@lemmy.world 21 points 2 years ago

Thought this was about Valve's Artifact TCG, and was like "wait, didn't they already shut that down?"

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago

Am I the only person in the comments that didn’t like Artifact? It was basically Digg v4. It was full of sponsored content and blog spam; and user’s couldn’t submit content.

It was everything people revolved about on other news aggregator platforms.

There's a thread from last week where some other alternatives were discussed: among them

I think the concept of a "mixed reader" that can pull in Big Social / Fediverse / RSS and other curated sources has a lot of potential (Nuggets is the most interesting one to me here)

[–] satansbartender@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

Nuggets not having an Android app is an interesting choice.

Thanks!

Unfortunately a lot of these are Apple-only and/or just RSS readers. I'll miss Artifact's algorithm.

We people who have android exists

Curious if this is a subtle attempt at flex, on the internet you never know

[–] will_a113@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

haha no, seems to just be a coincidence.

I remember trying it and disliking it. Wasn't very good, which seems to be echoed by other users. :p

Their recommendation algorithm was terrible. It just sent me every article from BookRiot and any article that mentioned whiskey.

[–] slugworth@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Been using it since before public release. I loved the news reader mode. It was so clean and simple. The news curation algo is solid. I will miss Atifact.

I completely forgot I had installed this app until reading this post. Guess they are making the right choice!

I really liked their option to rewrite clickbait headlines. That saved so much time and frustration reading nonsense articles.
