Easy fix .. vote for the other guy.

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 1 day ago (1 children)

With gerrymandering he is choosing his voters, that's why he doesn't care about opinions of those people.

He definitely won't choose them to vote for him.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago (5 children)

The Senate doesn't have gerrymandering like the house does. There's definitely still bullshit based on the way representatives are appointed per State, but they can't redraw districts to pick their voters like they can for the House.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 23 hours ago

with voter suppression it works the same way.

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 day ago

Good point, I missed that he is senator

[–] rigatti@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Amazing how many people don't understand this.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

Yeah, with senators it's more of a "'What are you gonna do? Vote for a Democrat?' evil laughter" situation.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Then he knows he got his election rigged, or the voters in his district are so fucking stupid he can insult them and piss on them and not lose a vote. I figuring on these elections are rigged.

Maybe Trump.as telling the truth when he said that if he wins Republicans wouldn't have to vote anymore.

I don't think a lot of these people understand what it means for them to be a public servant. This is not a job where you put your interests first. You are quite literally a servant to your constituents, and your entire purpose during your term is to serve their wishes, to carry out the will of the people. The amount of people that will get elected into a role like that, then be shocked when the people that elected them ask them to do things for them is baffling to me.

[–] teamevil@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean they literally spend their entire term in office listening to lobbyists instead of constituents so it's not too hard to think they don't really care...

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 23 hours ago

and they spend all thier time campaigning for funds from donors in the meantime, no time to actual legislate.

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 52 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Motherfucker that's his fucking job. Listen and read about what your fucking public say you public servant

This civil servant is laughing off their constituent's first amendment rights.

The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely. It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution-conan/amendment-1#amdt1e_hd17

Its more than mildly infuriating, it's unconstitutional.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Bro, the actual text is shorter than the summary. Not like it's written in Middle English or something.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 6 points 1 day ago

Thou speaketh true.

However, I thought the summary was both more in spirt of the common modern interpretation of the law and was easier for people to grasp. It also had some nice context linked in the summary which some might fund useful.

This is the actual text of the first amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Currently, I think the first amendment is being attacked because if that "Congress shall make no law..." part. Which goes against the spirit of the law and how it has been interpreted for most of US history. However, I'm not a lawyer.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

You say that, but clearly some Senators don't fucking get it just from reading the text and need the long-winded explanation.

[–] Korne127@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I mean I was mad and then watched the video… and I don't think that's worth the rage and the provoking headline tbh.

I mean, on the one hand, this is the nut of why the Senate as an establishment is fucked. You have one guy who is supposed to represent the views of upwards of 38 million people (or, even we're being a bit cynical, 9M partisan voters). Obviously, he won't do that. Arguably, this is an impossible task.

Then, on the other hand, it really depends on which Senator and which constituent we're talking about. Because I'm old enough to remember "Town Hall" events in 2010 and 2016 that had very obvious partisan plants looking to effectively heckle a Congressman in order to "Go Viral" with a clipped and edited response. This was part and parcel with the "Project Veritas" strategy of disinformation and race-baiting.

But then you have a guy like Cochran who has been a piece of shit his entire career (arguably his whole life). A man who had been infesting the Mississippi Senate since 1978, as a Nixonian Southern Strategy candidate. A guy who ranked among sleazeballs like Strom Thurmond, Jeff Sessions, Mike Lee, Rick Scott, and Joe Manchin as a bigot, parasite, and hack. For his replacement, Roger Wicker, to be even more openly reviled by his constituency really says something about the abysmal state of Mississippi politics.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Abolish the Senate, expand the House. By the People, for the People.

[–] Master@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

On one hand its infuriating to hear but also anyone who's done any politics will know that the legitimately crazy people will send hundreds of bat shit crazy messages when they are off their meds. Even at a city council level there is some legit crazy stuff you have to deal with.

They literally laughed with him at "Get a Life". Hahaha he ignores when we ask him what he's doing, or for him to help us or defend us. Hahaha it's so funny, that's what we voted him in for, for him to ignore us.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

...and the US taxpayers provide the income for these loser motherfuckers.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

When do we start throwing shoes at these corrupt goons?

And to be clear I'm saying their end goal is to do an Iraq and Fallujah on US cities.

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

They're trying to have a life but you and your buddies are trying to make it as difficult as humanly possible.

The appropriate response from constituents to the senator saying this is “get a real job you fucking asshole”

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

If God was real a comically large anvil would have just blessed this fuckers head.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

He represents the voice of his voters which citizens united spelled out. One dollar. One vote.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Aaaand they'll still get re-elected lol
