They are so desperate to find a use of AI that people have no option but to use.

[–] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 hours ago

Idk about that, I rooted my Pixel and now Google won't let me play with the built-in AI apps.

And nothing of value was lost.

[–] sabreW4K3@lazysoci.al 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

TBH, marketing this as AI is just ridiculous. It's literally a bunch of if/else statements.

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

You are not wrong, I mean, the whole AI term is just a joke, is nothing but a fancier algorithm

[–] sabreW4K3@lazysoci.al 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

It's all just to impress investors. I don't dispute that everyone is scrambling towards AI, but machine learning isn't AI, most of it was barely machine learning. This, definitely isn't AI. I used to have weather summaries on my vBulletin board. If there's a sunny.gif, echo "it's sunny, with highs of" . {high}…

In strict computer science terms, ML falls under the AI umbrella, so it is AI. But not all AI is ML.

[–] sabreW4K3@lazysoci.al 3 points 12 hours ago

Oh? Thanks for teaching me. I thought ML was the precursor to AI, but not actually AI.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 9 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

I'm not sure why there's so much hate for this. It appears to be a completely optional feature, you don't have to use it if you don't want.

[–] Ilandar@lemmy.today 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Lemmy saw "AI" in the title and kneejerked, as it tends to do.

Did someone say AI?

[–] Sunsofold@lemmings.world 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

It may or may not be optional, but even if it's optional it's a modern tech company so it'll be default on, mostly because someone at HQ wants to be able to walk into their yearly review and say 'I 'led' the team that developed this 'feature' that a full 35% of users didn't turn off, so that means I increased customer satisfaction by 70%. Please don't fire me.' It's change for change's sake at best.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 7 points 20 hours ago

Sure, but does that matter if the feature works and fulfills a need that users have been asking about for years?

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly out of all of the uses of AI... I'm okay with this one.

[–] sabreW4K3@lazysoci.al 4 points 19 hours ago

I think it's a stretch to call it AI, it's the same thing that Niagara Launcher does. It barely even qualifies as Machine Learning and I say that as someone who thinks it's very very cool.

Fuuuuuck outta eah

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 20 hours ago

Google was never good at innovating and it shows.

[–] ninjabard@lemmy.world 0 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Fuck. I swapped not that long ago because I was tired of Samsung's bullshit. Guess I'll swap again to something else when this phone starts to die.

[–] Strayce@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Pixels are pretty easy to get custom ROMs on. I'm sure you can find something that doesn't include this.

[–] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago

For now. Google didn't release the Pixel-specific stuff with the Android 16 release.

[–] BandanaBug@piefed.social 1 points 13 hours ago

I can highly recommend GrapheneOS!

[–] Ilandar@lemmy.today 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Aren't Pixels already filled with AI? Why is this the thing that tips you over the edge?

[–] ninjabard@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

When I swapped, Gemini wasn't being shoved down our throats.

[–] Ilandar@lemmy.today 2 points 18 hours ago

I think Sony is one of the few major (in terms of brand name recognition) manufacturers that is yet to jump on the AI hype train. It has the standard Android stuff like Gemini, but hasn't done much else. Other than that, all I can really think of are smaller manufacturers like Fairphone that don't have the resources to develop anything themselves. All the major Chinese brands are full of this stuff, as are companies like Nothing and Motorola which took a while to get there.

[–] etherphon@piefed.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I can't get rid of this phone fast enough I guess.

It's a fine idea but I'm concerned that it will not work with my banking and work apps, then I'm kinda stuck. Everything works fine under Graphene for you?

[–] BandanaBug@piefed.social 1 points 2 hours ago

Yeah works fine for me. Although only two banks in my country apparently throw a fit over non stock phones. The fit being biometrics not working. So YMMV. I'd say it'd worth a try. Revolut also works for me so if you'd want you can link your bank with that and use it.

[–] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago

Your bank has a website, I assume?
