They haunt the abandoned malls and apartment buildings rather than old houses...

[–] umbraroze@slrpnk.net 5 points 12 hours ago

I'd totally buy a haunted mansion if it's haunted by a ghost from the 1990s. Hell yeah.

...Oh, I can imagine more headlines. Someone spending a lot of money to buy a house haunted by a communist, and the sociopolitical debate this purchase creates.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 2 points 11 hours ago

I would immediately find an exorcist to banish that bitch.

"Get PWNT Noob" is written in blood on the walls. A classic late 90s haunting.

[–] edg@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago

I already fill that role in my household.

The reason old buildings are "haunted" is usually carbon monoxide. That's why modern buildings don't have ghosts.

[–] NickwithaC@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I just read a post-it about that...

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

in my own handwriting no less

[–] Thorry84 12 points 1 day ago

I'll check on it after a nap

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think it can also have to do with pipes and stuff vibrating at a sub-audible frequency which can cause feelings of dread and fear. Horror movies use this technique pretty frequently.

[–] Wolf@lemmy.today 1 points 11 hours ago

It also depends on people who believe in ghosts. A normal person just hears pipes making noise.

I went to my buddies house one day and he was excited to show me a video he recorded.... of particles of dust being lit up by the cameras light. I almost felt bad to say the truth because he was so excited to have captured 'ghosts'.

The ghost of a nerd died in 1998 adding animated gifs to your website while you sleep.

[–] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 68 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Said nerd and I are probably the same age. I could live with this.

Your brand new laptop or whatever future devices they'll have in 2050 just stops working because of all the advertising spam in everything

[–] PaupersSerenade@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

writing prompt; a small family keeps finding their futuristic computers infected with old malware. No matter how often they delete LimeWire someone adds it back.

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's, like, a g-g-ghost in the machine, Scoob!

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Wasn't this one of those old laptops that had something called .... ummm .. what was it ... doors? .. no, no ... Windows! it was called Windows!

[–] lazyViking@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The show ghosts has a ghost that died in the early 2000s and he is just a baller "the pantsless ghost of a wealthy Wall Street stockbroker from the early 2000s" and he just wants to party

[–] perishthethought@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

T Money!

When is the new season? September?

[–] lazyViking@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Oh man, you just made me look it up, and now I realise there are way more seasons than the two available on my localized netflix 😵‍💫

and it seems like season 5(!) is set for October, so I got some months to binge it all 🤩

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

There's also the UK version which is way better. But way fewer episodes and it's ended.

[–] perishthethought@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Woot! Yah, my eyepatch is handy sometimes. This show is worth it.

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

It's the only thing on CBS worth watching.

[–] Honytawk 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It probably takes a century or so for a ghost to manifest.

In the time span of eternity, 100 years is nothing.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It’s a lot of paperwork they have to fill out first. Permits and inspections. The bureaucracy of the afterlife.

[–] maniclucky@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Luckily there's a handbook, though I've heard it reads like a VCR manual.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It used to read like stereo instructions, so it's improved

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Making 12:00 flash on the VCR display was another classic haunt, but no one has a VCR anymore.

[–] gjoel@programming.dev 4 points 1 day ago

Now they make your smart bulb disconnect from the network.

[–] Iapetus@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm pretty sure my ghost is still partying with the goths, in the loft I lived in in 2010.

If you start seeing phantom CD cases with lines of speed racked up on them, or hearing the faint sound of epic mashups, you'll know you're in the right loft.

[–] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The causes might be environmental.
Haunted houses are a product of the US culture and the oldest houses commonly in use there are from the 1700s.
But it also needs to be fairly isolated - nobody is going to notice a haunting in the middle of a city.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

There are plenty of haunting stories that predate the US by several thousands of years.

[–] thedarkfly 8 points 1 day ago

"Haunted houses are a product of US culture", right...

[–] RVGamer06@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Rawr XD" why not "Rawr X3"?
