Nah, I'm at issue with that because me.
I used to watch them, for me the content has gotten a bit boring, but they still occasionally upload some interesting stuff. Also I used to listen to their podcast every week and it's still one of my favorites, I just don't get to listen to podcasts as much.
As for their controversies I think they've handled them well, but we don't have to agree on that.
I miss the beard. I feel like I watch less since he shaved, but that just might be a coincidence as my ADHD makes me binge different content in spurts.
He just finished growing it back lol
Guess my break is over then, how convenient!
Hate this guy.
There is only one Linus in Linux. Torvalds.
Same. I remember him like becoming a thing and then I saw a video where there was all this panic about losing a bunch of data since it was all stored on a striped array with no backup, and I’m thinking “this guy is giving tech tips?” I wasn’t sure if it was satire, but I thought it was dumb and found him / his staff just annoying.
Why do you hate him?
He chose his channel's name to be deliberately confusing.
edit: reading the other comments in this thread, he sucks.
How is it confusing
Thanks linux
We’ve had Sad Linus, but what about Meth Linus?
I don’t follow this guy. Did he fuck up or something?
His crew has claimed many abuses (supposedly he has been absolved, I don't have knowledge of or an opinion on whether that's justified).
He stole a prototype of a product then sold it for profit ("What Happened Between Linus Tech Tips And Billet Labs?" on this page).
Also on that page are other allegations of which I was unaware, most of which (at a glance) seem to be about improperly testing and/or representing products. I particularly like the one about claiming a mouse was poor quality after he failed to remove a cover from the sensor.
edit: I've been informed that my understanding of the situation with the prototype may have been incorrect. Reading the thread below may clarify matters.
He was “absolved” by a company that he hired to investigate.
The situations mostly come down to he said/she said, so nothing for the company to find…
The result of the investigation was that there wasn’t any evidence, not disproving or proving the allegations
Most of these criticisms are from a time which they have at least claimed they're out of. They made a huge deal about apologizing, slowing down, and doing things properly. Have they done so? Hard to know without a look behind the scenes, but so far I haven't heard any new complaints.
I kind of feel for Linus. He is clearly NOT the guy to be in charge of a media company that recieved a 100 million dollar buyout offer and in charge of 50+ people. I genuinely believe he has good intentions and isnt trying to do anything evil or anti consumer.
Doesnt mean his fuckups dont have real world impacts for others though. Hiring a CEO to run the "business" for him was absolutely the smartest thing he has done in a long time.
"Stole a prototype" is unfair language, they made a huge mistake and auctioned off the prototype. Linus admitted the mistake to Billet Labs and paid them for the prototype.
They also installed the product incorrectly in a test and shat all over it and the initial response on the controversy from Linus on the forum was pretty terrible.
True, they fucked up a lot.
Ah, I never watched the video(s) so was just going off of what I've read elsewhere and previously. If my understanding was incorrect, I apologize; I certainly wouldn't want to spread misinformation. I'll add a note to my original comment.
You dont get to where Linus has gotten without fucking up a few times. Most of his big controversies are due to bad practice of an employee and hes owned it and corrected it. The rest are due to his Spicy takes on the WAN show where he gives the 'ceo perspective' on consumer issues.
Downvote for making me look at this person. Ick.
Fuck Linus
Why?
From this write-up: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/gamers-nexus-vs-linus-tech-tips-billet-labs-review-controversy
A major concern Gamers Nexus highlighted was Linus Tech Tips's June 24th, 2023, review of a product prototype by Billet Labs[2] in which they used an incompatible piece of technology despite Billet Labs reportedly having been clear about the specifications the product needs to work accurately (seen below).
Moreover, the prototype worth thousands of dollars was purportedly given to Linus on loan with the expectation of it being returned. However, Linus supposedly did not return the prototype to Billet Labs. Instead, he auctioned it off to the highest bidder, which could have been a direct competitor to Billet Labs.
Does it take into account all the changed that happened at LTT, or is it out-dated?
Not sure about that! Did LTT get the prototype back to the Lab it was borrowed from?
No, they admitted the mistake to Billet Labs and asked them to send a bill to compensate them for the loss. LTT paid that bill.
Nope, they ignored them until Steve pointed it out, then they gaslit them
Personally, it's the repeated instances of his company using things wrong, saying the thing is bad because it doesn't work, and then doubling down if it's pointed out that it only didn't work because they fucked it up
Bingo! Many years back I stopped watching them when they killed their storage system. It was a Rube Goldberg that was destined to fail and I suddenly realized the channel was actively making me stupider if I followed their advice.
yeah it's just a content farm at this point, they clearly don't give much shits about the quality of the content
honestly I don't think Linus himself has bad intentions but he's clearly become complacent/arrogant. He hides it well though
You know that feeling where someone seems to know what they're doing in an area you don't know a lot about, so you trust what they say, and then they cover an area you do know a lot about and you realize they never knew what they were doing, they just knew more than you and how to make it look good?
I had that disconnect in 2019 when LTT, primarily Linus himself, did a Velkase Velka 3 video and did so much wrong that his gaming results were worse than my personal build, which is an accomplishment because we used the same CPU (R7 3700X), he had a 2060 and I was using a 1650 Super, and my system was running quieter and 10°C cooler on both CPU and GPU temps. I heard about the rest later, but looking at when that video was posted, I stopped trusting that Linus/LTT did any research at all in October 2019, because when you buy a bad CPU cooler, bad PSU, bad exhaust fans that you can't even set properly, and test the system at default settings, it's very clear you didn't even try.
Linus messing up building the case because he didn't read the instructions? Entirely justifiable, makes for very funny camera things, there's the entertainment part of your infotainment. It's a wacky case made explicitly for an extreme niche of an extreme niche of a (fairly) niche hobby, and Linus is funny when he's winging it on the aesthetics part. Concluding that something is too hot and too loud for use unless your parents are divorced and you need to take your pc to the other house every week, when you caused it to be hot and loud by putting 0 effort into something because you didn't just like, ask someone who knows what they're doing? Wild
You know that feeling where someone seems to know what they're doing in an area you don't know a lot about, so you trust what they say, and then they cover an area you do know a lot about and you realize they never knew what they were doing, they just knew more than you and how to make it look good?
This is so true, I have a few strong interests in random things that aren't very applicable to real life, but they tend to reveal these people really clearly.
wouldn't the thermals in your case being lower be a culprit of the 1650s having a lower TDP than the 2060 though?
On the GPU side, yes and no, since the CPU and GPU are partitioned from each other and the temp of one doesn't have any effect on the other, but we were getting the same frame rate with mine at ~75 and his 2060 running to around 84. I know someone else who had the case with a 1080 in it (180W vs the 2060's 160W, or my 1650S's 130W overclock) running at similar temps to mine while destroying both. It really comes down to using good exhaust fans, which he was not (and one of his just wasn't spinning and he never stopped to find out why or fix it)
Edit for clarification: I'm saying the exhaust fans (a choice he made) are the limiting factor because his 2060 is running against the built in "something is wrong" limit where the GPU starts to downclock itself, because the same case with proper exhaust fans can handle a higher wattage card and allow OC room to a lower wattage card
bruh he had a fan not running? how do you not realise that
that makes sense ig
Worse, he pointed out on cam that the fan wasn't spinning for some reason, then didn't fix it or investigate and tested it as is
gross.
YES DO AS I SAY!
No, I don't think I will.
