(This is perfectly legal where I live if that matters)

I'm really curious because I used to have a lot of misconceptions about mushrooms of the psilocybe variety and I'm wondering how fly agaric would compare. From what I've heard it's more dissociative and less euphoric and the visuals reflect that too but I'd like to hear some first hand knowledge. I'll probably try some fly agaric tea (that way it's not neurotoxic) at some point, only a small amount to get to know it. I just think it's a fascinating species in general and basically I want to experience some of what it has to offer. But if I do I'd like a rough idea of what to expect.

It's anticholinergic, so just take a bunch of Benadryl and tell me how that feels

I've done it quite a few times.

It's not really comparable to psilocybin mushrooms in any way. It feels a lot closer to like alcohol where instead of getting belligerent or even really drunk, you have troubles telling how big you are.

There are sometimes visuals but they're more like being sleep deprived.

Where it REALLY shines is when you use it as a dream drug. Dreams on amanita are pretty close to indistinguishable from real life. And you are usually quite lucid for them.

You should also really buy dried caps and simmer them with a little bit of lemon juice to make tea. The gummies are super sus and it's really a crapshoot whether you'll get a research chemical, straight up THC, or synthetic muscimol/ibo which is bad for your liver.

Tangential: how common is it around here to know of the historical connection between the amanita (ie. harvesting, use, effects, coloration, etc.) and traditional Yuletime (et al) iconography?

What do you mean specifically?

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

Succinctly, a few of the cultural origins are:

  • Decorating a tree w/ baubles ≈ par-drying plucked amanitas (for transport) on the boughs of the conifer they're harvested under
  • Yule/Christmas colors: Red w/ White accents = the amanita cap, 100%
  • Flying reindeer : caribou and other creatures that tend to scavenge during the winter (most, especially in Siberia/Lapland) are likely to stumble into a near-lethal experience, and floaty weightlessness is a known effect of the mushroom's ingestion (whether the story came from humans "seeing" their reindeer fly, or a wandering caribou to told them so, the world may never know)

Yeah, I’ve eaten it a couple times in the form of gummies and it’s given some visuals. More like waviness, nothing too crazy, and good amount of laughing and general sense of happiness. I took it with one of my best friends and we had a great time.

There is some strange interplay with how it affects the way you perceive distance and size. It’s not like a crazy noticeable though, and kind of hard to describe. It was like the context of things compared to what I personally considered small or large shifted.

Example being: imagine you are the size of an any in terms of body size, how large your human body would seem. That’s how large I felt, and everything else I as readjusted to fit that theme. It wasn’t good or bad, just peculiar.

Alright that already sounds more promising than I had anticipated 😅 Would you say it had some of the introspective effects other mushrooms have?

[–] Kalothar@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Because I was using it a more social setting, I was mostly focused on that.

Though I would say there is definitely possibility for that there

I have made tea from dried caps several times. It is not comparable to psilocybin at all. I would more describe it as a bit of a deliriant. There are no visuals. It is a bit energizing on onset, and music definitely makes you want to dance. This is followed by a heavy sedative effect, and you'll likely want to sleep. It definitely gives very detailed and surreal dreams that can be pleasant. Overall, I'd say they were an interesting experience that were enjoyable overall, though I'd definitely prefer psilocybin. Word of caution: Even with boiling and lemon juice, nausea is still likely, including vomiting.
