I know other devs interested in making Tux games but before I begin with them I figured I would ask the community what they would like to see

A Conker/Golden Eye type game? DOOM-like? Farming Sim? Fighting Game similar to Smash? Open World RPG similar to older Bethesda games? RTS like StarCraft? Turn-Based like Final Fantasy or Expedition 33? Going mad for power in a 4X? Another genre entirely?

What genre would you all prefer to see have a game made first? I will basing it off of likes

I plan to make a game in each genre but for now figuring out which to do first is the goal. Have concepts, tools, experience, devs, etc ready to make anything the community wants

Edit:

Leaving this open for 2 more days. Whichever gets the most between the 2D Fighting and Turn-Based comments. They are both tied at 14 upvotes

Tux-based 2D super smash type game, but more of an emphasis on physics and destrucitble environments.

Similar to the Attak flash game from JohnnyTwoShoes back in the day: https://youtu.be/GjQ2cGwsktg&t=10

A smash type game would be great! Add characters from Tux Kart and from other open source projects. Maybe a paperclip and apple as well, as villains.

I'd say keep it simple to start. Perhaps a turn-based tactics game like final fantasy tactics advance, or more 3D, like XCOM?

I find it fun to see a new game in a unique genre I haven't seen before, that doesn't neatly classify into categories. Hyperbolica is a good example for me (maybe others could categorise it, idk)

That's a great suggestion!

I'll definitely add doing more unique game concepts as part of what gets made overtime.

You inspired me, I just thought of a Tux Overhead Legend of Zelda type game but with chess-like movement.

Where you can go throughout the game unlocking chess pieces as abilities to switch to a different piece to change how you move and abilities. Maybe even add some unique pieces too for enemies, and player to move in new ways

Do an Indiana Jones spoof but with Duke Nukem humor. Action adventure with many puzzles mixed in.

I think the hottest genre is still "survival/craft", but there are so many similar looking games, you gotta stand out somehow. Two of the best ways to stand out are combining genres, and having an interesting artsyle.

I would start with the basics of Stardew Valley, people love farming, resources management, upgrading tools and buildings, wooing villagers. But what is lacking in Stardew? I think the battle system and world exploration.

Instead of stardew's generic 2d Zelda-style battles, I would suggest a card battle system like Slay the Spire. At night players can delve into the card battling cave, looking for new cards, new seeds, farm equipment, etc, always trying to delve deeper for better loot. During the day they work the farm, earning money, crafting new cards and foods that can buff their card battles.

For world exploration, it would depend on your style choices and budget. If you stick with 2d pixel graphics I could see a Zelda style map filled with puzzles and unlocks. If you go bigger with a 3d engine I could see a sprawling Bethesda style map.

As for artsyle, you definitely want to avoid being a Stardew clone. Go a bit darker, both in color and theme, while still creating a game that is suitable for children.

I'd like something like Stardew Valley ❤️

I imagine a newer open source RPG Maker would make a lot of people happy, with or without tux branding.

There are several ones (selected only FOSS alternatives, excepting discontinued ones)

  • Godot Engine (2D,3D)
  • Redot Engine (2D,3D)
  • EzEngine (3D)
  • Micro Studio (online)
  • GB Studio (2D)
  • EasyRPG (compatible with the outdated Open RPG Maker)
  • Adventure Game Studio
  • OHRRPGCE (2D)
  • RPG 20XX
  • Blitz3D (2D and 3D, Windows only)
  • Pixelbox (Html5, Java script)
  • RPD JS (Online and all OS)
  • RPG Wizard (2D)
  • Duality (C#, OpenGL)
  • G3D Innovation Engine (3D, commercial quality)
  • GemRB (Portable)

EasyRPG seems to be what I'm talking about albeit focusing on being compatible with an older RPG Maker and not only inspired by, Godot and those are a whole other ballpark and require a lot more coding knowledge to get into imo.

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago

Well, some of the other, even 3D don't need big programming skills, but other need it. It depends on your skills which is the best for you. Also not the same if there are only simple scripts or if needed a knowledge in C#, C++, Html5 and others.

Id love to see very generic timeless type of games with less content but with the opportunity for the community to expand upon with maps/items/characters.

I would love to see a Trackmania clone. plain racing game with 4 button controls, fun physics, simple yet powerful level editor and a leaderboard.

EDIT: or a binding of isaac clone with potential for shit ton of items as i have just read somebody else mentioning it.

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

When you mentioned Trackmania, I was reminded of Super Off Road which is a very simple racing game but is a lot of fun. Played it at the arcade and on my computer when I was a kid. A Tux branded version would be pretty easy to make and games with easy controls are great for kids.

Putting it out there; Badlands was the better overhead circuit style racer.

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Ooh, interesting. I love driving games with guns!

[–] UNY0N@linux.community 3 points 3 days ago

If you could use some of the Tuxcart resources/engine, perhaps a vehicle-based battle game with a garage for customization of your vehicle?

[–] libre_warrior@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago

I love the puzzle game lumines. Would be delightful to see a commons version of it <3

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago

Something simple like Super Money Ball maybe but with a snow ball and some gliding effect? It should be a bit unique.

[–] dosse91@lemmy.trippy.pizza 1 points 3 days ago

I'd love to see more studios make puzzle-adventure games, like the ones by Cyan

[–] Telorand@reddthat.com 1 points 3 days ago

My vote is for two:

  • Narrative-driven game
    • This could be anything from a simple visual novel to Horizon: Forbidden West
  • Multiplayer game
    • Not CoD-type games. One like REPO or Peak (i.e. more casual/silly).

I want to see some kind of physics based balatro. Like 'dolphin up' with insane combos akin to balatro or binding of Isaac. Maybe something like traveling through time. Start at the big bang, and try to make it to modern day. Move through time faster and faster with combos.
