Image is from this article, of a Chilean copper quarry.

Title is a reference to Trump's social media post about copper, which was, as usual, mostly deranged.

Trying to follow Trump's administration is pretty difficult, but as of right now, he is threatening 30% tariffs on Mexico and the EU starting on August 1st, as well as new tariff announcements on a bunch of other countries (including, bizarrely, a 50% tariff on Brazil), and also apparently a 50% tariff on copper, which the US imports half its supply of and is, of course, a very important metal in many applications.

I'm not sure what the plan is to bring back domestic copper production beyond hoping that it just sorta works out, but prominent copper producers, such as Chile and Canada, seem both concerned and confused. Reuters had a line that made me chuckle:

Boric said he was awaiting official communication from the U.S. government, including whether the tariffs would include copper cathodes, and questioned "whether this will actually be implemented or not."

Big mood, Boric.

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Hopefully, if anything, this whole Syria thing finally makes it crystal clear to the Resistance and other potential Arab targets that there is no capitulation or cooperation with the US and its allies. Once you are marked for destruction, that's it, regardless of whether or not you decide to play ball or if you are one of "their guys". So don't play ball.

this lesson has been known for years, actually america itself has said it for decades (Kissinger being America's friend/being America's enemy quote)

not fully internalizing that by now is just foolishness

The issue is that there are internal contradictions within their societies, and there are segments of society that really really want to be part of the West.

I think this is what happens when we allow people to be propagandized by Western culture (television, movies, internet, etc) and it's not actually a failure of the governments to understand the empire. Even if the government understands reality, they have to appease these interests or they'll be ripe for color revolution as people demand Funko Pops.

The internet has been the biggest spreader by far. At least with tv and films you could have local or regional companies producing content. With the internet it’s so heavily American that it’s created a sort of monoculture with the youth.

China’s Ministry of State Security warns of foreign espionage attempts to smuggle rare earths via shipping channels

spoiler

China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) reminded on Friday that foreign espionage and intelligence agencies have attempted to collude with and recruit domestic lawbreakers to steal China’s rare earth-related items through shipping and delivery channels, posing a serious threat to national security.

A certain country lacks the capability to independently produce and refine rare metals. In order to secure its domestic supply, it has long engaged in stockpiling these resources through various channels and means, the MSS said.

According to investigations by China’s national security authorities, a major contractor in a key sector of that country has been involved in illicit activities: on one hand, repackaging and relabeling rare metals to falsely indicate they are “not of Chinese origin” before re-exporting them to its home country; on the other hand, attempting to smuggle China’s export-controlled items such as rare earths by means of underreporting content levels, falsifying product names, sending multiple small shipments via express delivery, and switching transportation routes, the MSS said.

Upon obtaining solid evidence, China’s national security authorities, in coordination with relevant departments, took lawful action to block these illegal outflows of rare earth-related items, effectively safeguarding the country’s resource security and national security.

Rare-earth elements are hailed as “industrial gold” and “the mother of new materials.” China currently ranks among the world’s top in terms of rare-earth reserves, production, consumption, and exports, giving the country a significant advantage in global resources and industrial chains. Some countries closely monitor China’s rare-earth supply and go to great lengths to carry out theft and espionage activities, according to the MSS.

Investigations have revealed that foreign espionage and intelligence agencies, along with their agents, have attempted to instruct domestic criminals to smuggle rare earth materials out of the country by concealing their composition and exploiting China’s delivery and shipping channels.

Tactics include falsely declaring rare-earth elements as non-controlled items or forging technical specifications and component data, such as declaring high-purity rare earths (like dysprosium and terbium) as low-value products (such as ferroalloys or nickel powder), or mislabeling them as common goods such as “solder paste” or “refractory materials” to evade export controls.

It has also been discovered that these foreign agents and their proxies have attempted to hide undeclared rare-earth materials within other legally declared cargo or transport equipment. For example, they processed raw rare-earth materials into intermediate products, mixed rare-earth powders into ceramic tile materials, or concealed them inside plastic mannequins or bottled water.

These items were then smuggled out under vague labels such as “alloy parts” or “mechanical components” in an attempt to bypass export regulations.

The MSS vowed to work lawfully to prevent and combat infiltration, sabotage, and espionage activities by foreign intelligence agencies and their agents targeting China’s strategic mineral resources, firmly safeguarding national security.

Somewhere in a warehouse in Tennessee there is a guy whose job it is to saw off the arms of mannequin dolls and pour out the rare earth powder so they can build bombs to murder Palestinian children.

This is basically just a list of ways Chinese companies have been bypassing US tariffs lol

Cracking down on this would be difficult without also cracking down on those companies which I suspect China doesn't want to do. Difficult one.

https://archive.ph/FyIgD whoops, MIC machine broke!

US diverts Patriot systems from Switzerland to Ukraine

U.S. officials have told the Swiss government that Patriot air defense systems in the production pipeline for the alpine country would be diverted to help defend Ukraine, according to a Swiss announcement. The July 17 statement by the Swiss, which said the notification from the United States arrived the prior day, illuminates some of the hasty mechanics behind Washington’s newfound emphasis on helping Ukraine repel near-constant Russian attacks with missiles and drones.

Switzerland ordered five Patriot systems, made by Ratheon, in 2022. Deliveries were set begin in 2026 and go through 2028. The U.S. foreign military process, which governs the sale, makes the diversion of defense goods possible, the Swiss announcement notes. No information was available about how many systems would be affected and what the new timing for future deliveries would be. Switzerland’s Patriot pick was part of a lengthy air-defense and air-policing review by the government that also led to an order of 36 U.S. F-35 fighter aircraft.

Last year, the United States told Switzerland that a batch of ordered PAC-3 MSE interceptors, the most advanced interceptors fireable with Patriot, would similarly be diverted to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Germany this week offered to buy two Patriot systems from the U.S. and give them to Ukraine. One Patriot setup costs roughly $1 billion, depending on the number of interceptors, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said during a visit to Washington on July 14. Details for the purchase are now under discussion with the U.S. administration, Pistorius said following talks with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Outstanding questions surrounding the transaction are all “solvable,” he added.

Speaking at the LandEuro conference in Wiesbaden, Germany, on July 17, top NATO commander U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich signaled a new dynamic in supplying Kyiv with the defensive weapons. Grynkewich said he would bring European nations together to work on delivering Patriot and other capabilities to Ukraine. The idea is to “look at what’s the art of the possible” in orchestrating the flow of new production equipment to Ukraine’s defense, he said.

Unlike Russia with its weak economy having to delay deliveries of equipment, the Western MIC is going strong! stonks-down

Not posting on Syria right now. There’s too much misinfo, videos from years ago being represented as Druze and/or Bedouin massacres, groups claiming to hold this or that roundabout or intersection. I’m going to take my own advice and wait. Too much chaos, back and forth fighting, I will wait till there’s a semblance of clarity before posting more

People used to fight wars with no phones, just living in the moment. Now look how far we’ve fallen smdh

In local austrian news: Felix Baumgartner, the guy who jumped from the stratosphere for Red Bull and spent the rest of his life being a loud racist, misogynist, and Nazi party FPÖ fanboy, is dead. His paraglider crashed into a hotel area. A worker was injured and is in the hospital. Rest in Piss, he died just like he lived: falling from the sky.

[–] SchillMenaker@hexbear.net 44 points 3 days ago

This is such wholesome news, I saw that a guy died and I felt a little bad. Thanks for turning that around.

Lots of fake Xi Quotes going around while he still has real bangers:

From the Central Urban Work Meeting:

“When it comes to launching projects, it’s always the same few things: artificial intelligence, computing power, and new energy vehicles. Is every province across the country supposed to develop industries in these exact directions?” General Secretary Xi Jinping said, viewing industrial planning from the perspective of “acting in accordance with objective laws,” pointing out the root issues in development: “We must firmly oppose formalism and bureaucratism, and also address the problem of pretending to understand when one doesn’t, and being self-opinionated. We must prevent the emergence of ‘three-pat’ cadres — those who pat their chest, pat their head, and pat their butt.”

fire

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 56 points 3 days ago

Could you imagine any western leader openly talking about "addressing the problem of pretending to understand when one doesn't"? It is a sound and sensible idea to realize your own limitations but western leaders would consider admitting this a weakness.

Brazilian Federal Police carry out search and seizure warrants against Jair Bolsonaro. He will have to comply with precautionary measures imposed by the Supreme Court, such as wear an electronic anklet, not using social media, stay at home from 7pm to 7am and not going near embassies due to the Supreme Court's fear that Bolsonaro would seek asylum in the USA.

A Federal Police convoy has just left Bolsonaro's house and is taking the President away. Bolsonaro is being taken to the nearest prison to be fitted with an electronic anklet. The defense lawyer says that Bolsonaro's cell phone and computer have been seized, and that the HQ of Bolsonaro's party, the Liberal Party, has also been investigated.

Resistance News Network telegram

After decades of relentless struggle and repeated delays, a French court has finally approved the release of Georges Abdallah, the iconic Lebanese resistance fighter and the longest-held political prisoner in Europe.

The decision, made today, July 17, 2025, mandates his release later this month on the condition that he leave France and not return.

Abdallah, eligible for release since 1999, has endured 40 years of unjust imprisonment. His freedom has been consistently obstructed by immense zionist and US pressure. Previous court approvals, including one in 2013 and another in November 2024 for a December 6, 2024 release, were overturned due to this external intervention. In June 2025, the decision was again postponed until today.

It was revealed in 2015 that Hillary Clinton herself ordered the French Foreign Minister to keep Georges imprisoned, absurdly claiming the 72-year-old "may return to the battlefield."

continued...

Georges Abdallah, from his humble Lebanese village of Al-Qoubaiyat, was inspired by the revolutionary broadcasts of the PFLP and went on to form and lead the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions (LARF). He was arrested in 1984, accused of involvement in the killings of a US military attache and a zionist diplomat in Paris in 1982. To Georges, the trial was a farce, a tool of imperialism to obfuscate the complicity of the US and France in the bombing of his country. He neither confirmed nor denied the allegations, maintaining that the French state and its authorities are complicit in the occupation of Lebanon and Palestine.

In his words:

"Let us be worthy of the epic of the torches of freedom, those invincible resistance heroes detained in zionist prisons. Naturally, the popular Palestinian masses and their fighting vanguards in captivity can count on your active solidarity. May a thousand solidarity initiatives flourish for the sake of Palestine and its glorious resistance."

"Yes to building a comprehensive Arab resistance front to confront normalization in all forms. Down with imperialism and its agents, the zionists, and Arab reactionaries."

"Together, Comrades, and only together will we win." #FreeThemAll

the Ezra Klein episode on Epstein that just came out is so fucking painful. Why does it take 45 minutes for them to say "Jeffrey Epstein didn't kill himself...probably."
