Image is of the Power of Siberia natural gas pipeline, which transports gas from Russia to China. This isn't an oil pipeline (such as the ESPO) but I thought it looked cool. Source here.

Trump has recently proposed a 500% tariff on goods from countries that trade with Russia, including India and China (who buy ~70% of Russia's oil output), as well as a 10% additional tariff on goods from countries that "align themselves with BRICS." Considering that China is the largest trading partner of most of the countries on the planet at this point, and India and Brazil are reasonably strong regional players, I'm not sure what exactly "alignment" means, but it could be pretty bad.

Sanctions and tariffs on Russian products have been difficult to achieve in practice. It's easy to write an order to sanction Russia, but much harder to actually enforce these sorts of things because of, for example, the Russian shadow oil fleet, or countries like Kazakhstan acting as covert middlemen (well, as covert as a very sudden oil export boom can be).

Considering that China was pretty soundly victorious last time around, I'm cautiously optimistic, especially because China and India just outright cutting off their supply of energy and fuel would be catastrophic to them (and if Iran and Israel go to war again any time in the near future, it'll only be more disastrous). Barring China and India kowtowing to Trump and copying Europe vis-a-vis Nordstream 2 (which isn't impossible, I suppose), the question is whether China and India will appear to accede to these commands while secretly continuing trade with Russia through middlemen, or if they will be more defiant in the face of American pressure.

Amnesty rejected for those accused of State crimes in Peru - Prensa Latina

ArticleLima, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) The National Human Rights Coordinating Committee (Cnddhh) of Peru today rejected the approval of an amnesty for dozens of former military and police officers accused of human rights violations and tried or without sentences.

“Impunity does not hide the crime, it aggravates it”, stated the CNDHHH, pointing out that the amnesty opens the way to impunity for military and police officers charged in 600 trials for extrajudicial executions, torture and forced disappearances.

The measure was approved with the votes of 16 right-wing members of the Permanent Commission against 11 votes against cast by legislators of the left and center.

It also benefits senior citizens (70 years of age or older), which includes the perpetrators of the massacres of unarmed civilians in Barrios Altos and La Cantuta, under the iron fist government of Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) during the so-called internal conflict (1980-2000).

The promoters of the amnesty alleged that the trials against those now amnestied who fought against terrorism (as the armed groups that operated in the country are called here) have dragged on for 25 years or more without being sentenced.

Congressman Alex Flores refuted the right-wing majority by pointing out that the amnesty does not benefit those who fought against terrorism, but the bad police and military who committed serious human rights violations and their victims were unarmed civilians.

“Fujimorism and its allies have consummated an act of impunity that offends the victims, their families and the memory of the country,” said legislator Flor Pablo, alluding to the first minority of the Popular Force party, to which the promoter of the questioned measure belongs.

Progressive legislator Ruth Luque, said that the measure is used to favor President Dina Boluarte, investigated for civilian deaths at the hands of military and police during the prolonged protests against her ascension to the Presidency, by succession, in December 2022.

The center-right legislator Francis Paredes pointed out that the decision of the Permanent Commission -in charge of the Legislative due to the recess of the full Congress- was too fast and should have waited for the resumption of the plenary sessions for a broader debate.

The president of Brazil's Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, spoke to Lula by telephone as soon as Donald Trump released the letter sent to the Brazilian president in which he informed him that he had imposed a 50% surcharge on all Brazilian products exported to the US. Trump took the measure to put pressure on the STF to close the case in which Bolsonaro is accused of attempting a coup d'état in Brazil.

The magistrates agreed with Lula that only the Presidency of the Republic and Itamaraty will respond to Trump. The decision is based on the assessment that Trump is promoting an attack on the country, and not on a specific institution. Some of the magistrates believe that Trump is using Bolsonaro as a pretext, but that he actually wants to weaken Brazilian institutions in general. The regulation of big tech and Brazil's good relationship with China would be Trump's real reasons for attacking the country.

Municipal election campaign kicks off tomorrow in Venezuela - Prensa Latina

Article

Caracas, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) The electoral campaign for the July 27 elections to elect mayors and councilmen will officially begin tomorrow, Friday, announced the secretary general of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello.

In his Wednesday night program Con el Mazo Dando, the political leader pointed out that 335 mayors and 2,471 councilors will be elected for this electoral process -the 33rd since the arrival of the Bolivarian Revolution- with an equal number of alternates.

He added that in parallel, on Sunday, July 27, the youth will vote in a popular consultation for 37 thousand projects that were presented, discussed and evaluated by the youth in the assemblies of their communities.

The PSUV leader described this exercise as “participative and protagonist democracy”.

Commenting on the opposition sectors, Cabello stated that “they lost control of the territory” and, what they had, they will end up losing because of the “political stupidity of not participating in the elections”.

He predicted that in the elections at the end of July “the panorama that is foreseen is that the Revolution will win the 335 mayoralties”.

The head of the Unified Command of the Bolivarian Revolution, Jorge Rodríguez, predicted weeks ago the triumph of the forces of the Simón Bolívar Great Patriotic Pole (Gppsb) in all the mayoralties, for which they have been preparing themselves organizationally.

In the regional elections of last May, the Gppsb obtained an overwhelming triumph in the governorships by winning in 23 of the 24 states of the country, while it dominated by ample majority the number of seats in the National Assembly.

Cabello disqualified the reiterated message of opposition leader María Corina Machado that the Bolivarian government is going to fall and about alleged setbacks, to which he responded that in the last years there has been a process of consolidation of the Popular Power around the victories of the revolutionary forces.

She assured that nobody believes her anymore, which is evidenced by the data reflected in the polls in which her popularity is low and going downhill.

The National Electoral Council planned the electoral campaign from July 11 to 24, in which 53 political formations will participate, divided into 36 national political parties, 10 regional ones, three national indigenous organizations and four regional ones.

Of the total number of councilmen, 1,420 candidates will be elected by list vote, equivalent to 60 percent; 982 by nominal suffrage, 40 percent, and another 69 will represent the native peoples.

For these municipal elections, 21 million 524 thousand 126 voters are summoned, of which 227 thousand 281 will vote abroad.

Concern in Costa Rica over visa withdrawal for legislative leader - Prensa Latina

Article

San José, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) The revocation by the United States of the tourist visa of the president of the Legislative Assembly, Rodrigo Arias, is having a great impact on Costa Rican society.

The decision transmitted the day before by Washington, which also implied the cancellation of the document of Constitutional Court judge Paul Rueda, was confirmed by the press office of the Constitutional Court, according to the newspaper Delfino.cr.

Arias, for his part, admitted in a statement that the U.S. decision to withdraw his tourist visa generated “a deep surprise”, and said he did not know “any objective reason that merits it, since all my life I have had a friendly and respectful relationship with the United States”.

The legislative authority set 14:59 (local time) as the time when he was notified by the Embassy in Washington about the cancellation, and expressed his confidence “in getting to know the reasons for this decision, for me incomprehensible”.

The President of the country, Rodrigo Chaves, on his part, described in a press conference as “shameful” that the leader of the Congress and the Vice President, Vanessa Castro, are prevented from entering the northern country.

The new visa revocation extends the list of high-ranking local officials who have been deprived of that right by the United States during the current administration of President Donald Trump, including the brother of the leader of Congress, former President Oscar Arias, Nobel Peace Prize winner.

The legislative leader is also the fifth Tico deputy to be banned from entering the United States, after Francisco Nicolás Alvarado, Vanessa de Paul Castro, Johana Obando and Cynthia Córdoba, although that right was also invalidated to legislator José Pablo Sibaja, but without a visa.

Others affected by the measure are the auditor of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) Ana Sofía Machuca; the Telecommunications manager of that entity, Luis Diego Abarca; and the former managers Carlos Luis Mecutchen and Jaime Palermo.

Also from that energy agency were affected the head of the Development and Construction Division of the Network, Douglas Eduardo; and the president of the union Internal Front of ICE Workers, Carlos Stradi.

According to Delfino.cr, the U.S. embassy and the Department have so far refrained from offering details on the reasons for the above mentioned revocations, although the official position of that country regarding the omission of individual explanations in these cases is well known.

The news about the visa cancellations on Wednesday arrived when the legislature began the plenary session of the day in Congress, headed by its president, who left the premises after delegating Vice President Vanessa de Paul Castro to lead the debate.

Don't know if this was posted, but Chinese Defense Ministry said yesterday that the J-10 fighter can be sent to "friendly countries".

https://www.newsweek.com/china-responds-after-reports-iran-seeks-j-10-fighter-jets-2096519

Iran are likely not the only country in talks for these aircraft after their success in India and Pakistan's dispute. So it's still not confirmed that they're letting Iran buy the aircraft.

It should be noted that China has interest in not letting these J-10s get bombed while they are on the ground, and that's just what Israel/US will try to do if they get shipped to Iran. It could be worth a shot to send a few over and see how they fare fighting US aircraft, though.

“Alligator Alcatraz” Prisoners Say Their Living Conditions Are a Form of Torture

(Article)

They report inadequate and maggot-infested food, inability to bathe, flooding, denial of religious practice, and more.

spoiler

Officially known as Krome Detention Center, the 5,000-bed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) immigration detention facility located on the grounds of a rarely used municipal airport approximately 20 miles west of Miami last week began receiving people arrested during the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign. While U.S. President Donald Trump and other proponents of the prison have sadistically joked about alligators eating escaping prisoners, the biggest dangers faced by detainees are found inside the facility’s walls.

“I don’t know their motive for doing this, if it’s a form of torture,” he added. “A lot of us have our residency documents and we don’t understand why we’re here.”

Another inmate, the Cuban reggaeton artist Leamsy La Figura, said guards “only brought a meal once a day and it had maggots.”

“They’re not respecting our human rights,” one detainee told CBS News Miami during a phone interview. “We’re human beings; we’re not dogs. We’re like rats in an experiment.”

“They never take off the lights for 24 hours,” he claimed. “The mosquitoes are as big as elephants,” and “there’s no water to take a bath, it’s been four days since I’ve taken a bath.”

A Colombian detainee said his mental health is breaking down. “I’m on the edge of losing my mind. I’ve gone three days without taking my medicine,” he said. “It’s impossible to sleep with this white light that’s on all day.”

“They took the Bible I had and they said here there is no right to religion,”

I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood. I had, as I now think vainly, flattered myself that without very much bloodshed it might be done.

Bruh they opened this thing like a week ago. The only way the food has maggots is if they are deliberately putting the maggots in there.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

Once people grow tried of the republicans and it is the democrats' turn on the presidency again, they are going to do fuck all about this. They'll maybe dial the gloating down a notch, stop calling it Alligator Alcatraz and stop selling merch but that will be it.

It is a tragedy that there is no Red Army to liberate this camp.

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 37 points 2 days ago

NGL I was a bit confused by people joking about it getting flooded. Like its obvious they don't give a fuck if the camps they built get flooded, as a matter of fact it clearly part of what they want the prisoners there to experience.

The latest video posted by Ansarallah/Houthis on the sinking of the Eternity C gave us a look at their Close Range Ballistic Missiles (CRBM, sub 300km range) in the anti ship role, and an anti ship cruise missile. Three different types of missiles can be identified.

  • Fateh Mobin, anti ship ballistic missile, 200-300km range. Inertial guidance in the midcourse, with electro optical terminal guidance, an infrared camera/sensor most likely.

  • Faleq 1/Fajr-4CL, 333mm diameter guided artillery rocket, used in the anti ship ballistic missile role. Range of 200+km. Inertial guidance in the midcourse, electro optical terminal guidance.

  • C-802/YJ-83/Noor/Al-Mandeb 2 anti ship cruise missile, originally a Chinese design, reverse engineered by Iran and now Yemen. Inertial guidance for most of the flight, active radar seeker for the final stage. Range of 120-170km.

Interesting to note that none of the missiles use satellite navigation at any stage of flight, all inertial navigation with various seperate terminal guidance seekers. So jamming would be ineffective as a means of defeat. Also all shorter range weapons sub 300km range, no need to use longer range weapons when the ships are off of the coast of Hodeidah.

There were at least three impacts, two from the CRBMs on the top, and one on the side, low down on the hull, likely from the cruise missile. Official statement said 6 missiles were fired.

Lula da Silva's Message to Trump

lula-bars : "In view of US President Donald Trump's public statement on a social network on Wednesday afternoon (9), it is important to emphasize that Brazil is a sovereign country with independent institutions that will not accept being tutored by anyone: Brazil is a sovereign country with independent institutions that will not accept being tutored by anyone.

The judicial process against those who planned the coup d'état is the sole responsibility of the Brazilian justice system and is therefore not subject to any kind of interference or threat that would harm the independence of national institutions. In the context of digital platforms, Brazilian society rejects hate content, racism, child pornography, scams, fraud, speeches against human rights and democratic freedom.

In Brazil, freedom of expression is not to be confused with aggression or violent practices. In order to operate in our country, all national and foreign companies are subject to Brazilian law. In the case of the trade relationship between Brazil and the United States, the information about the alleged US deficit is false. The US government's own statistics show a surplus of 410 billion dollars in trade in goods and services with Brazil over the last 15 years.

In this sense, any measure to raise tariffs unilaterally will be responded to in the light of the Brazilian Law of Economic Reciprocity. Sovereignty, respect and the uncompromising defense of the interests of the Brazilian people are the values that guide our relationship with the world."

Hacker group claims full breach of anti-Iran TV channel ‘Iran International’

The London-based Persian-language television channel Iran International has been targeted by a hacker group known as Hanzala, which has gained full access to the channel’s internal systems and released confidential information about its staff.

More below

spoiler

In a statement, the group announced it had completely infiltrated the network, shutting down its systems, servers, and communications infrastructure.

The group said it successfully extracted sensitive internal data, including confidential communications, personal staff information, financial records, and correspondence with foreign entities.

One of the most significant breaches, according to the hackers, was access to the channel’s primary message-receiving account, long used as a secure contact point for informants.

Hanzala said it held the full identity dossiers of more than 71,000 individuals who have communicated with the network.

The group said according to its analysis Iran International was operating as a “spy and media-infiltration network” under the direction of the Mossad, dressing up as an independent news outlet.

It has already released some identity data of the channel’s personnel and stated that more selected materials from the data cache will be made public soon.

The channel confirmed the breach, attributing the leak to unauthorized access to the computers of the targeted staff.

Donald Trump announces a 50% tax on Brazil. Trump cited decisions by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and said that the taxes should start to apply in August.

Trump Letter to Lula da Silva

"Dear Mr. President: I met and dealt with former President Jair Bolsonaro, and I respected him very much, as I do most other leaders of countries. The way Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro, a leader who was highly respected around the world during his time in office, including by the United States, is an international disgrace. This trial should not be taking place. It is a Witch Hunt that must end IMMEDIATELY!

In part due to Brazil's insidious attacks on free elections and fundamental violation of Americans' freedom of speech (as demonstrated recently by Brazil's Supreme Court issuing hundreds of SECRET and ILLEGAL censorship orders to U.S. social media platforms, threatening them with million-dollar fines and expulsion from the Brazilian social media market), as of August 1, 2025, we will charge Brazil a 50% tariff on any and all Brazilian exports shipped to the United States, separate from all existing sectoral tariffs. Goods transshipped to try to avoid this 50% tariff will be subject to this higher tariff. In addition, we have had years to discuss our trade relationship with Brazil and have concluded that we need to move away from the long and very unfair trade relationship generated by Brazil's tariffs and tariff and non-tariff barriers. Our relationship, unfortunately, has been far from reciprocal.

Please understand that the 50% is much less than would be necessary for us to have a level playing field in our trade with your country. And it is necessary to have this in order to correct the serious injustices of the current system. As you know, there will be no tariff if Brazil, or companies within your country, decide to build or manufacture products within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to approve it quickly, professionally and routinely - in other words, in a matter of weeks. If for any reason you decide to increase your tariffs, whatever amount you choose, it will be added to the 50% we charge. Please understand that these tariffs are necessary to correct Brazil's many years of tariffs and tariff and non-tariff barriers, which have caused these unsustainable trade deficits against the United States. This deficit is a major threat to our economy and, indeed, to our national security!

In addition, due to Brazil's continued attacks on the digital business activities of U.S. companies, as well as other unfair trade practices, I am instructing U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to immediately initiate a Section 301 investigation of Brazil. If you wish to open your previously closed trade markets to the United States and eliminate your tariffs, non-tariff policies and trade barriers, we may be able to consider an adjustment to this letter. These tariffs can be modified, up or down, depending on the relationship with your country. You will never be disappointed by the United States of America. Thank you very much for your attention to this matter! With best wishes, I am, Yours faithfully, DONALD J. TRUMP"
