Trump has recently proposed a 500% tariff on goods from countries that trade with Russia, including India and China (who buy ~70% of Russia's oil output), as well as a 10% additional tariff on goods from countries that "align themselves with BRICS." Considering that China is the largest trading partner of most of the countries on the planet at this point, and India and Brazil are reasonably strong regional players, I'm not sure what exactly "alignment" means, but it could be pretty bad.

Sanctions and tariffs on Russian products have been difficult to achieve in practice. It's easy to write an order to sanction Russia, but much harder to actually enforce these sorts of things because of, for example, the Russian shadow oil fleet, or countries like Kazakhstan acting as covert middlemen (well, as covert as a very sudden oil export boom can be).

Considering that China was pretty soundly victorious last time around, I'm cautiously optimistic, especially because China and India just outright cutting off their supply of energy and fuel would be catastrophic to them (and if Iran and Israel go to war again any time in the near future, it'll only be more disastrous). Barring China and India kowtowing to Trump and copying Europe vis-a-vis Nordstream 2 (which isn't impossible, I suppose), the question is whether China and India will appear to accede to these commands while secretly continuing trade with Russia through middlemen, or if they will be more defiant in the face of American pressure.

On this day in 1972, Palestinian revolutionary icon, prolific writer, thinker, and fighter Ghassan Kanafani was assassinated by the Israeli Mossad in Beirut, Lebanon.

Kanafani's niece Lamees Najim was with him when the bomb planted in his car was detonated, and both of them were killed.

Kanafani was the spokesman for the Popular Front For The Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), founded by George Habash in the early 60's.

He became known as the "commando who never fired a gun, whose weapon was a ballpoint pen."

Ghassan Kanafani was 12 years old when he was forced into exile with his family during the 1948 Nakba, and he grew up to not only tell the story of Palestinians, but pioneer a legacy of revolutionary thought geared towards liberation.

Want to share an article I read in the Financial Times over the weekend. Really lays bare the reality of the global situation, where even the most ghoulish financial columnists can no longer deny the shifting global power dynamics to China. The whole article is worth reading, but I'll share some choice quotes here.

In the aftermath during the 2010s, the world tilted irrevocably towards the east. Today, it is hard to avoid the impression that it is tilting further China’s way. The contrast between the turmoil in Donald Trump’s America and the mood of calm progress exuded by Beijing is striking both in style and substance.

And take a look at how they admit that even the "massive real estate meltdown" a few years ago that most Western commentators said would cause "China's collapse" has been handled with relative grace.

As for China, it undoubtedly faces substantial macroeconomic challenges. Growth has slowed and youth unemployment is in double digits. In 2020-21 Beijing deliberately stopped the most dramatic process of urbanisation and private property accumulation in history, redlining further credit to its most inflated private developers. Unsurprisingly the ensuing real estate slump has produced a lasting hangover. But the remarkable thing is that, unlike in Europe and the US in 2008, this has not morphed into a systemic crisis. If China’s annual growth rate stabilises at around 5 per cent, it will have to be counted as the most successful soft landing in the history of economic policy. If further stimulus is required, one would expect the policy process in Beijing to be laboured, but to result in an intelligible outcome.

Also some fun riffing on AI:

The White House favours gutting any effective regulation of artificial intelligence, even as more and more experiments confirm that existing large language models are not safely aligned with acceptable political and social norms. China’s platform giants are ploughing huge resources into AI too. The results are no more predictable. But if there is any prospect that AI development poses a threat to the social and political order Beijing deems acceptable, can anyone be in doubt that it would be halted in its tracks? That is what the humbling of the platform oligarchs in 2020 betokened. What analogous guarantee is there in the west? The contrast is stark. On the Chinese side technocratic, top-down managerialism to please any centrist pining for the 1990s. In the US, policy as post-truth reality TV.

Overall a good look at how some of the ghoulish businessmen understand view the world at this moment in time; certainly not encouraging for the United States.

An update on Eternity C, the second commercial ship in as many days likely targeted by Ansarallah/Houthis in Yemen.

The ship has sustained severe damage, likely to the engine room as there is a lack of propulsion. It is also rumoured to be listing up to 15°. The 2 missing crew members (crew of 20+ Filipinos and one Russian) are now confirmed dead, and the ship is surrounded by small vessels and taking constant fire, preventing disembarkment or evacuation. With Magic Seas, the crew was allowed to disembark and abandon ship.

Various Iranian lawmakers are warning President Pezeshkian, stating that if he does not change the weak behaviour of the government, the Parliament may move towards impeaching him.

Amirhossein Sabeti, to President Pezeshkian's interview with Tucker Carlson: 'Your weak responses to the American reporter were against national unity and shameful. Apparently, you have not yet learned from your previous unwise and dishonorable negotiations with America and would like to be deceived once again. If the government's foreign policy does not change, the parliament's approach to the government will change.' (Impeachment)

Big talk from all these countries but none of them will stop being willing to accumulate Dollar financial assets unless they are forced to with exorbitant tariffs that can't be reasonably paid even with internal and external devaluation OR if the US sanctions them.

i think the problem is the private sector. the private sector in these countries (other then China maybe) has strong influence on the Government, they want to keep their income.

Timestamp: 1:26:25 I was watching this video from 2013 where Michael Hudson was asked about why China is willing to accumulate Dollars and export to the U.S. he said that they are pivoting to home market and it was for building productive forces.

So when is it coming? I do not know. Maybe once we are all dead.

The New York Times has revealed that US prosecutors have found evidence that Bukele made a deal with the MS-13 gang: in exchange for political support and less violence, the government would provide benefits in Salvadoran prisons. The pact came before Bukele proposed to Trump that El Salvador take in gang members imprisoned in the US. Trump accepted and sent more than $6 million as part of the deal, which is now the subject of an investigation. Authorities are investigating whether part of the money passed on by the White House was diverted to MS-13. The alleged deal may also have hindered US investigations into the gang, which is active even in the US.

Yemenis Mobilize in Saada in Massive Marches to Reaffirm Support for Gaza - Telesur English

Article

Under the slogan “Firm with Gaza: Preparation and Mobilization to Confront Aggression,” the northern Yemeni governorate of Saada witnessed 37 simultaneous mass marches this Friday, spanning the provincial capital and at least 14 districts.

Thousands of Yemenis gathered in symbolic squares such as the Prophet’s Birthday Plaza and the Martyrs’ Leader Square in Khawlan Amer, as well as in towns across Razih, Kitaf, Ghamr, Adh-Dhaher, and other districts.

From the central plaza, Governor Mohammed Awad praised the overwhelming public turnout and reaffirmed Yemen’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people, denouncing what he called the “shameful silence” of Arab and Islamic governments in the face of “Zionist and American crimes” in Gaza.

The official statement issued by the demonstrators condemned what they described as global complicity and inaction, which they argue emboldens Israel to continue its military campaign.

The declaration emphasized that the Yemeni people—guided by what it called a “Quranic liberation project” and a “firm identity of faith”—would not retreat from their support for Gaza, Palestine, and Al-Aqsa Mosque, and would not be intimidated by threats from Israel or the United States.

The statement also praised the “heroic stances and steadfastness” of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, calling their resistance a source of pride and inspiration for Yemenis.

Finally, the demonstrators called on Arab and Muslim nations to boycott Israeli and U.S. products, describing economic resistance as a “powerful and accessible weapon” and the minimum moral obligation in the face of what they termed genocide in Gaza.

Reaffirming Venezuela’s commitment to independence and dignity, Maduro said, “Under conditions of respect and equality, Venezuela is open to the world, with one condition only: absolute respect for the independence and dignity of the Venezuelan people and the glorious history of the cradle of the liberators of America, our Bolivarian Republic, slaves never again to anyone.”

And China demonstrates this every day.” This vision aligns with Venezuela’s own struggle to resist U.S. sanctions and economic warfare.

Despite severe sanctions that caused a drastic economic downturn, The President affirmed Venezuela’s resilience and sovereignty. He highlighted the steadfast support from China’s President Xi Jinping during Venezuela’s most difficult times and the importance of their growing partnership.

Lula Calls for New Financing Model to Tackle Sustainable Development and Climate Crisis - Telesur English

Article

‘If we don’t discuss a new way to finance developing countries, they will stay poor for more than 100 years,’ he said. On Friday, Brazilian President Lula da Silva urged the creation of a new financing model to address sustainable development challenges and the global climate crisis.

“If we don’t discuss a new way to finance developing countries—especially the poorest in Africa and Latin America—they will stay poor for more than 100 years,” he said during his opening speech at the 10th meeting of the New Development Bank (NDB) in Rio de Janeiro.

Lula highlighted that the NDB, established at the 2014 Fortaleza Summit in Brazil, has proven to be an inclusive multilateral financial forum capable of driving this effort. “Its main role is to create new financing formats,” he said, stressing the need for a more independent financial system by increasing the use of local currencies.

“It is essential that BRICS countries use their own currencies in financial operations, as we are already doing with 31% of NDB-funded projects,” the Brazilian leader said, noting that this distinguishes the NDB from other international financial institutions.

Lula also emphasized the need for new funding mechanisms to combat the climate crisis, pointing out that wealthy nations have failed to meet their 2009 Copenhagen Summit pledge to provide $100 billion annually to poorer countries for climate action.

He expressed concern for tropical forest nations like Congo, Indonesia, and Amazonian countries, reiterating the need to support Indigenous peoples and local communities protecting these resources.

NDB President Dilma Rousseff echoed this sentiment, stating that climate financing “must be more than just a promise—it must be a concrete mechanism for adaptation, energy transition, and resilience,” particularly in nations most affected by extreme weather.

Rousseff stressed that the NDB “must be at the forefront” of this effort by increasing investments in green projects.

The NDB, founded by BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), finances infrastructure and sustainable development projects in member states and other emerging economies.

The text reads, “President Lula participates in the annual meeting of the New Development Bank (NDB).“

Brazil’s BRICS Priorities

This year, Lula outlined two core priorities for BRICS: advancing South-South cooperation to overcome structural inequalities and build strategic autonomy, while forging alliances for balanced, sustainable economic, social, and environmental development. Brazil has identified six key action areas:

  1. Global Health Cooperation – Strengthening equitable access to medicines, vaccines, and health technologies, as well as bolstering the Global South’s health sovereignty against Western pharmaceutical dominance.
  1. Trade, Investment, and Finance – Boosting BRICS trade flows, expanding local currency use in international exchanges, and reinforcing the NDB as an alternative to the IMF and World Bank.
  1. Climate Change – Pushing for a unified BRICS stance in multilateral forums, focused on climate justice, Amazon protection, green financing, and technology transfer.
  1. AI Governance – Advocating for global AI rules that respect human rights, cultural diversity, and sovereign development of applications.
  1. Multilateral Peace and Security – Demanding structural U.N. and Security Council reforms to include more Global South representation and negotiated conflict resolutions.
  1. BRICS Institutional Development – Strengthening the bloc’s operational structures, refining expansion mechanisms, and establishing a permanent secretariat.

Guatemala rejects recent U.S. memorandum against Cuba - Prensa Latina

Article

Guatemala City, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) The José Martí Cuba Solidarity Coordinating Committee in Guatemala today expressed its deepest concern and energetic rejection of the recent U.S. memorandum against the Caribbean island.

In a press release, the organization stressed that this new measure by President Donald Trump intensifies the already prolonged and cruel economic, financial and commercial blockade against the Antillean country, something that has punished its population for decades.

He considered that this policy, sustained for more than sixty years, is not only a flagrant violation of International Law, but also transgresses the fundamental principles of respect for sovereignty, self-determination and peaceful settlement of disputes.

“The blockade has been an insurmountable obstacle for the integral development of the Cuban people, generating unjustifiable humanitarian and social impacts that directly affect access to essential medicines, basic foodstuffs and crucial technologies,” he pointed out.

Families suffer the consequences in a palpable way in their daily lives, she remarked in the text sent to Prensa Latina.

As coordinator, she joined the innumerable international voices that, “in a constant and majority manner, have demanded in the United Nations General Assembly the immediate and unconditional cessation of this blockade policy”.

The persistence of this measure is even more regrettable considering that, year after year, the overwhelming majority of UN member countries have condemned it and voted systematically in favor of its lifting, she said.

It is evident that, after more than six decades, the blockade failed in its objectives, as it proved to be an ineffective and counterproductive policy that only served to worsen the suffering of the population, without achieving a significant change in the model of the island, he added.

It reiterated its unwavering solidarity with the people and government of Cuba, while reaffirming its commitment to foreign relations based on constructive dialogue, genuine cooperation and mutual respect among all nations.

The Coordinating Committee finally urged the international community to redouble its diplomatic efforts to press for the lifting of this measure, which it described as anachronistic.

Premier Li praises China's good relations with Brazil - Prensa Latina

Article

In a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the Brics summit in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, Li affirmed that both sides are working together to build a fairer world.

China is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with Brazil in multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations, the Brics itself and the Group of 20, Li stated.

China's F-35 equivalent, the J-35, has officially entered service with the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Here the J-35A model is seen in formation with the J-16D Electronic Warfare and Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD/DEAD) aircraft ( EA-18G Growler equivalent) and the J-20 5th generation stealth aircraft (F-22 Raptor equivalent). J-35A at the back, J-20 in the centre, and the J-16D leading the formation.

J-35A on it's own:

J-35C, carrier variant, on it's own;

China is building a modern air force, very much following the US model of airpower, SEAD/DEAD and stealth technologies. China is probably the only country in the world, outside of the US, with the resources and technological prowess to do such.

[–] geikei@hexbear.net 19 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Funny how the J-16D is leading the formation of 5G platforms and should be comfortably the most expensive plane in these photos. Shouldnt the j-15D be the growler equivalent tho? Being carrier based and all. Does the US operate a lamd based EW fighter platform like the j-16D?

Also it would be interesting to know the fleet numbers for these platforms. I think i have seen smth around 70 airframes but i dont remember where or if that was for the 16D and 15D variants all together

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 19 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

J-16D is probably the most important aircraft out of all of them too, the role that these SEAD/DEAD and electronic attack platforms play is incredibly underrated. If you don't have an aircraft that can fulfill this role, gaining air superiority is very difficult, even if you have a ton of fighter aircraft and numerical superiority vs the opponent (see the Russian air campaign against Ukraine). J-16D deserves to lead the formation.

Australia also operate the EA-18G, I know the US Air Force have an agreement to embed their own electronic attack officers in deployed EA-18G units after retiring the EF-111s. And there's nothing stopping the EA-18Gs not currently on carriers from being forward deployed to airbases. J-15D would be the most direct comparison, but the J-16D is more advanced in deployment. J-16D was officially introduced in 2021, J-15D at the end of 2024.

hamas-red-triangle hamas-red-triangle hamas-red-triangle hamas-red-triangle hamas-red-triangle hamas-red-triangle

  • RESISTANCE NEWS NETWORK-

Zionist sources report that the number of soldiers killed in the resistance strikes in northern #Gaza tonight has risen to six. This comes after the mangled body of a soldier, previously thought missing, was recovered.

According to early reports, resistance fighters initially targeted a vehicle or convoy of vehicles with a minefield. A rescue force was then targeted with explosives upon its arrival. A second rescue force, hoping to rescue the first, was also targeted. A third IOF rescue force was targeted with explosives, and the initial ambush site was targeted with small arms and shoulder-fired rockets repeatedly in order to confirm kills.

Intense mortar fire from the resistance was also reported near the scene, leading to the delay of further rescue operations and reportedly leading to a number of soldiers burning to death within their vehicle which was targeted.

While zionist media has so far only acknowledged six killed and 11 wounded soldiers, the number is likely much higher. Five zionist-run hospitals - Asota, Soroka, Beilinson, Tel Hashomer, and Ein Kerem all prepared to receive casualties from the security incident. Typically, 17 casualties (as currently claimed by zionists) from the Gaza Strip would be distributed among two hospitals.

Multiple sources called this ambush among the deadliest security incidents since the start of the zionist aggression on Gaza. Netanyahu‘s meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff was interrupted so that he could be briefed on the incident.
