Foreign tourists? A vanishing breed

[–] towerful@programming.dev 1 points 16 hours ago

Strangely enough, I have nothing against tourist taxes.
A couple bucks here and there to a tourist generally isn't that much. And it's commonly used by cities that have a lot of tourism and the cost of living is high in order to offset some.of that cost of living causes by high tourism.
I doubt trumps administration will use it that way. they will sack all the park rangers, sell off the park assets that are valuable (lumber, mining, oil, whatever), charge tourists more for what's left, and say "look how profitable these parks are" as if it's a win. Leaving a devastated natural beauty behind.

But generally, I'm on favour of a tourist tax

Will be payable in Trumpcoin! - BIG Announcment Conming Soon!!!

This will likely increase the shortfall in our already dwindling tourist spending, thereby justifying a sell-off of public lands to private entities.

Ah that’s the angle. I was like “Ok not a good thing but I guess not that bad” and was optimistically surprised, but alas…

No one wants to visit your shithole backwards dystopian Naziland.

On the other hand, Canada just made our parks free TO EVERYONE!

Fuck you, USA

Please, as a US citizen, make the US govt feel pain. They are not listening to the people.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't think they're a US citizen.

[–] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm not a US citizen and I have zero plans to ever set foot in Trumpland.

Almost every Canadian I know feels the same way. If we travel, we want to relax. We don't want to risk being sent to one of your Cruelty Centres.

Nothing the US offers is worth that risk.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

As a US citizen, I don't blame you. I wouldn't come here if I weren't already stuck here.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well, in the past you would've been wrong. There was a time our parks (which are fantastic) were affordable and you were very unlikely to be detained. Blame trump and his moron supporters for those things changing, not the sane majority

Blame trump and his moron supporters for those things changing, not the sane majority

When the "sane majority" bands together and makes some practical effort towards regaining control of the country, I'll sparw thwm from blame.

Waving signs for a few hours on the occational weekend isn't nearly enough to fix what's wrong with their country.

Easy enough to say from the armchair. If this happens in Canada I'm sure you'll be the first armed insurrectionist and all, but most of us like being alive and outside prison in the states.

This is where I'm lost with the american system. The president decides on taxing tourists in parks? That's a level of micro-management beyond my comprehension. It's the kind of thing I would expect from a dictator to have the power to do.

[–] psvrh@lemmy.ca 1 points 17 hours ago

What's interesting, or frustrating, is that, on the flip side, American progressives had to endure years of Democrats telling them how things couldn't be done because they didn't have enough support for Republicans.

...and then Trump just does things.

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

So, apart from the tourist trap price hike you will get with any souvenir, food, or service you purchase, foreign tourists will have to pay even more while also having the risk of getting illegally detained by non-identified federal officers or being denied entry because of memes on their phones? US patriot culture was already difficult enough to swallow, although to be fair the shift to fascism already left it in shambles well before this drop in the ocean.

[–] PaulBunyan@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Whether you support the gap or not, it would be wiser to word it that foreign tourists pay normal cost and Americans (or non-foreigners) get a discount. They can charge the same rates, but people will feel like they’re getting a deal.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 1 points 17 hours ago

Since when has Trump chosen (or even recognized) the wiser option?

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I agree but the intent is assholry, so that information doesn't matter to this administration

[–] manualoverride@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I feel sorry for the sign writers who will have to update those fees for no reason. The world has got the message, we’re no longer welcome in the US, good luck and thanks for the movies.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago

and thanks for the movies.

Not even that.

Most of them are just more propaganda for American exceptionalism.

[–] Rozz@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 day ago

I doubt much if any of that money would go to the parks themselves

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

How dare people want to.... Enjoy our natural beauty, scenic wonders, and landscapes that have inspired generations of artists, musicians, writers and some of our nations most iconic leaders and minds.

How fucking dare they. We'll show you for traveling all the way to see some of the only unambiguously good things in our country.

What A Dick!

(If it doesn't get that reaction, he doesn't do it.)
