This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

No shit!!! ๐Ÿคฃ

I work in the AI field (f.k.a. Tech) and let me tell you: the only ones saying it will have a positive effect on the U.S. are the executives and their lickspittles.

AI may have a positive effect in Europe. They have rules and stuff there.

"AI experts" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. "The AI experts surveyed are those who were authors or presenters at an AI-related conference in 2023 or 2024 and live in the U.S.". So basically people who are part of the snake oil business.

What an absurdly misleading and generally useless poll.

Shocking: People working on a field more likely than people not working on that field to say that said field is good for the country.

In other news, water boils at 100ยฐC.

In other other news: The planet is burning alive and pushing blindly glorified, inefficient and power hungry word calculators won't necessarily make that better.

Sorry, I don't understand freedom units.

It's about the average temperature of a hot dog at a Braves game. Or 7/16ths the temp a black Ford F350 gets in a Walmart parking lot. Hope this helps.

[โ€“] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Does it have to be a Ford F350? Can't it be a different black car? Trying to understand it but I can't find the black ford f350 or the walmart parking lot.

[โ€“] Asafum 1 points 4 days ago

I'm sure there are conversion charts out there, but the F in F350 stands for freedom unit. It's what the whole system is based off of.

Snake oil salesmen are claiming their product is something it's not, more at 11

The AI experts also happen to be the ones who stand to benefit the most from AI because they are the people behind its creation. Of course they say it's good.

It's like the tobacco industry saying smoking isn't bad for you, sugar farmers saying sugar is not fattening, and the dairy industry asking if you've "got milk" to make your bones stronger.

[โ€“] savvywolf@pawb.social 16 points 4 days ago

Presumably because the "AI" that these people are working on is different from what's being shoved down our throat by aibros.

Stuff like folding proteins or whatever it is they do all day.

[โ€“] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 5 points 4 days ago

So people trying to protect their jobs will say good things? Who woulda thought?

AI has the potential to make most work optional in the long run. Humans have the potential to not use this for a global, eternal vacation full of rich experiences and artistic expression, but a reason to let everyone die that is not needed anymore

[โ€“] Krauerking@lemy.lol 6 points 4 days ago

Automation does. Not AI. We can automate work but a language model will not take away the work just the communication.

[โ€“] Asafum 4 points 4 days ago

but a reason to let everyone die that is not needed anymore

This is literally the only realistic outcome I expect of this. Capitalists will claim the right to the entirety of the profits generated because they "own" the AI, will have by then already destoryed any social safety nets in order to have their taxes reduced, and people who can't find work will be left to die.

People are also just scared of AI for some reason
