I was just trying to access Feddit.UK via a popular VPN. It looked like the site didn't even exist. Just a gray error page.

I'm not sure this is a good policy.

EDIT: I have clarification from ProtonVPN about what the problem is with accessing Feddit.uk. They have a service called NetShield which blocks IP addresses associated with malware and trackers. There is a false positive for Feddit.uk. Their team is aware of it, and will hopefully fix it. In the meantime, people can access Feddit.uk using ProtonVPN by turning NetShield off. It works for me.

It’s working with my nord VPN I haven’t blocked anything around VPNs so not sure what’s going on here

Would you mind sharing a screenshot and possibly a console log of the issue if you can?

DONE. I sent you private messages.

I can access it fine through Mullvad, maybe it's your particular VPN

Sshhh. Don't let them know they need to block Mullvad tunnels too!

But in all seriousness it works for me through Mullvad as well. I wonder what other VPNs they have blocked.

It seems to be a problem with ProtonVPN.

Interesting. If I switch ProtonVPN on, “server cannot be found” for feddit.uk. Even if I set the VPN to UK server.

No VPN - loads fine.

That sounds like a Proton problem with their DNS maybe. I wonder what happens if you override the DNS to something like Quad9?

Can confirm. I just tried with proton VPN and got a DNS error.

It’s an issue with NetShield. If you have NetShield off, you can access Feddit.uk. They seem to be working on a fix, though.

Yeah that worked, thanks for following that up!

Working for me from Proton, reckon they might have fixed it in the last 24h?

That's the private DNS adblocker right? I use AdGuard's one which doesn't seem to have a problem, maybe Proton have a block-first-verify-later policy for new domains like this?

[–] GoodKingElliot@feddit.uk 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

yes, it's the private DNS adblocker.

Tom would need to comment on this. It could be it's a balancing act (blocking IP blocks where bad actors have been seen, vs allowing genuine users).
It's also possible that the instance host provider blocks certain ranges by default.
