As temperatures like this are going to get more common: lining your streets with trees reduces the ambient temperature by ~3 celcius, and cities that only allow rich neighbourhoods to have trees on their streets are participating in collective punishment of the poor

[–] trinicorn@hexbear.net 37 points 6 days ago

not to mention the fact that the rich have AC too so they're not in danger regardless

Social murder

Please let Mamdani win the primary, the following will be so funny:

  • For once, tell libs they’ll have to “plug their nose and vote for the lesser evil” and even smugly claim “what are you gonna do? Vote Republican?”

  • The possibility of the left’s own Trump, albeit in an electoralist fashion

  • “The progressive case for Curtis Sliwa” NYT article.

[–] regul@hexbear.net 32 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Well Cuomo and Adams are just going to run independent campaigns, so those gutless shits will get "non-Republicans" to vote for.

Funniest outcome is a Republican winning because of all the votes getting split.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 20 points 6 days ago (2 children)

So..they’re doing a protest vote? Yeah, NYC has ranked choice but knowing libs they would probably rank Sliwa over Mamdani.

“A vote for Cuomo’s third party is a vote for Sliwa!”

[–] Chump@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago

Extreme power play to vote for only one candidate when you have RCV

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I thought that NYC only had ranked choice for primaries? And the actual election was just "guy who has the most votes"

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 10 points 6 days ago

Ah, I could be mistaken. So yeah, we would probably see “the progressive case for Curtis Sliwa” articles all over.

[–] Posadas@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago

Liberals don't want power.

They only want to endlessly critique it.

That so called pragmatism will go out the window the second that happens i-cant

nerd not a wet bulb temp the humidity in NYC today is like 45% and the dew point is like 65f

[–] triplenadir@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I think "wet bulb" describes how the temperature is measured, not a specific temperature or humidity.

NATOpedia:

At 100% relative humidity, the wet-bulb temperature is equal to the air temperature (dry-bulb temperature); at lower humidity the wet-bulb temperature is lower than dry-bulb temperature because of evaporative cooling.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet-bulb_temperature

[–] abc@hexbear.net 46 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Yes - wet bulb temperature is a measurement; but when people say 'wet bulb temperature' they are referring to when it is 100% relative humidity and your body's thermoregulation shits the bed because your sweat can't evaporate because the air is already full of water & you die a painful heat stroke death.

A 'feels like' temperature of 106 is hot and definitely excessive heat which should be avoided as much as possible (especially if you're part of a vulnerable population, like the elderly, disabled, and young children) - but it is not a wet-bulb temperature because the air is not saturated with water. You can still cool down with evaporation & your sweat on a 106 degree day in 45% humidity. That's like a wet bulb temperature of 80F.

FWIW the temps shown in the OP are not measured wet bulb temps and are instead the heat index (i.e. 'feels like). The wet bulb globe temp is like 80-85F like I said. You can get a good estimate of the actual wet bulb temp based on dew point & air temp using this calculator: https://www.weather.gov/epz/wxcalc_dewpoint (or like the basic 1/3 rule where you take Air Temp - Dew Point, divide that by 3, and subtract the result from the Air Temp.)

[–] TauZero@mander.xyz 2 points 6 days ago

Incorrect use of verifiable technical terms really grinds my gears! A true wet bulb temperature above 98F would kill everyone outside an air-conditioned space within an hour.

At least this is the only time it will happen. blob-no-thoughts

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 26 points 6 days ago

These are the lowest temperatures you'll experience for the rest of your life!

May every boomer who attempts to vote cuomo die waiting in line

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 37 points 6 days ago

You don't mess with the Zohran

[–] Monstertruckenjoyer@hexbear.net 33 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I tried to go hiking in this yesterday just to sorta stress test myself. Don't do that lmfao, so dumb barely made it back on my own two feet

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 21 points 6 days ago

Biked ~2 miles to the gym and I was drenched when I arrived

[–] trinicorn@hexbear.net 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

yeah I was out in similar (higher heat index but lower temp) weather and I thought I was doing good, taking it slow, covering my face from the sun, drinking some water and gatorade

But after I got back inside I felt really faint for a few mins.

2 years ago I did basically what you did, but on a bike. brand new bike, had to take it for a ride, almost couldn't get up the stairs to the door when I got back.

[–] Monstertruckenjoyer@hexbear.net 14 points 6 days ago

Yeah there's something about the stopping that really does it. I felt OK so long as I kept going, but as soon as I stopped I was like oh fuck what'd I just do to myself

the young voters he needs decide to stay home because of that one poll showing him in the lead lathe-of-heaven

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 18 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

You take that thing off right now! Who said you could have the lathe!?

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 16 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Wow that’s hot, and that’s coming from an Australian, lol.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I agree and that's coming from an Alaskan, lmaoo

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Woah, you actually live in Alaska?

[–] Florn@hexbear.net 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 7 points 6 days ago

And the truth is I actually live in Texas.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, I thought that the only part of the US that got that hot is the southwestern desert part. No idea New York could reach that sort of temperature.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago

there's nowhere in the US that never gets very hot in the summer, it's just a question of how long that hot period lasts and if it sustains >100 F

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago

Are there more polling stations in Manhattan and Brooklyn or something?

[–] rootsbreadandmakka@hexbear.net 11 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

Forgot the guys name for a second and thought you were referencing Adam Sandler’s character in that movie from a few years back (also named Zohran??? or something like that) which iirc takes place in New York. Very confusing but I found it funny nonetheless.

[–] LanyrdSkynrd@hexbear.net 5 points 6 days ago

I never even saw the Sandler film(I think the character is named Zohan), but I keep thinking about that too

[–] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I don't know anything about NYC, what is that long island in the middle?

[–] Posadas@hexbear.net 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The one with New York over it is Manhattan, next to that is actually a peninsula where Hoboken and Jersey City are.

[–] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago

I was hoping that would be a joke about Long Island but I guess I do know nothing about New York.
