Well according to these companies, piracy is lost revenue, so I guess that would count as buying it negative times.

If you seed for someone then you're buying it -1 times on someone else's behalf.

I track how many times I intend to buy a game in a short unsigned integer, so I briefly shifted from planning to buy this zero times to planning to buy 127 copies.

Thankfully, I updated my mental model in time. But maybe that's the effect they're going for, here?

Hard to say. Scaring customers away is an interesting marketing strategy unless they've started doing some Hollywood accounting and get an insurance payout for a product they already knew would fail.
