"We require to be encouraged rather than frightened, and those generals who, on the eve of a battle, speak only of dangers and difficulties to their troops, ought to expect a shameful flight rather than a glorious victory. Indeed, soldiers ought to be cheered with the certain hope and prospect of glory ; and nothing should be left untried that may lessen fear and enkindle courage.
