I've only ever seen it growing in pictures so I really don't know if it does grow like this or if it's just an internet thing.

Well you don't.
It does grow like that, but then it spreads out into whispy ferns that look a little like dill. Plenty of people who only ever see the young spears that are eaten don't recognize the fully grown plant.
Asparagus is basically edible bamboo
