What is Neurodivergence?

It's ADHD, Autism, OCD, schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, bi-polar, aspd, etc etc etc etc

“neurologically atypical patterns of thought or behavior”

So, it’s very broad, if you feel like it describes you then it does as far as we're concerned

Rules

1.) ableist language=post or comment will probably get removed (enforced case by case, some comments will be removed and restored due to complex situations). repeated use of ableist language=banned from comm and possibly site depending on severity. properly tagged posts with CW can use them for the purposes of discussing them

2.) always assume good faith when dealing with a fellow nd comrade especially due to lack of social awareness being a common symptom of neurodivergence

2.5) right to disengage is rigidly enforced. violations will get you purged from the comm. see rule 3 for explanation on appeals

3.) no talking over nd comrades about things you haven't personally experienced as a neurotypical chapo, you will be purged. If you're ND it is absolutely fine to give your own perspective if it conflicts with another's, but do so with empathy and the intention to learn about each other, not prove who's experience is valid. Appeal process is like appealing in user union but you dm the nd comrade you talked over with your appeal (so make it a good one) and then dm the mods with screenshot proof that you resolved it. fake screenies will get you banned from the site, we will confirm with the comrade you dm'd.

3.5) everyone has their own lived experiences, and to invalidate them is to post cringe. comments will be removed on a case by case basis depending on determined level of awareness and faith

4.) Interest Policing will not be tolerated in any form. Support your comrades in their joy!

Further rules to be added/ rules to be changed based on community input

RULES NOTE: For this community more than most we understand that the clarity and understandability of these rules is very important for allowing folks to feel comfortable, to that end please don't be afraid to be outspoken about amendments and addendums to these rules, as well as any we may have missed

With the escalation in Gaza and West Bank on top of the incident I'm going to limit how much I spend on telegram, lemmy, etc. because I can get massively hyperfocussed on this shit. Feels a lot like when the Ukraine Russia war heated up and I was stuck to my phone 8 hours a day.

I'm lucky enough to have started my meds recently which are absolutely eviscerating my anxiety, but others aren't so lucky.

Maybe delete a couple of apps and limit your exposure for a couple of days so even if you DO doomscroll it's less paralysing.

Thanks but its too late, i already stumbled upon a thread of my countrymen massively celebrating the zionist terror, and i got so furious, but i did the right thing and deleted my reddit account

[–] Chertstone@hexbear.net 8 points 17 hours ago

I am german, I didnt even look at my country's subreddit since october 7 because I know a 100% of whats being said there and I had enough of the cringe of since the last big event back in 2019.

Was it /r/newiran? That sub is insane.

I've not really spoken to my family but I knew some family in the US who are pro iran getting bombed so they can "sar bezanan" when it's all done. I hate it so much.

[–] Chertstone@hexbear.net 4 points 17 hours ago

The new world struggles to be born ❤️

when european imperialism got its first foothold in mainland north american in mexico city; it became known as the noche triste and this part of your comment reminded me of this memorable quote attributed to that night (translated):

"It was a defeat for some, a victory for others, but on that night, amid blood and tears, the Mexican people were born"

everyone throughout the entire global south now have their own version of the noche triste and i think it helps to frame it this way as we watch helplessly while modern day imperialism does the same thing to the gazans, iranians, & ukrainians that classic imperialism did to the mexicans/native-americans/first-nations, aboriginals, jews, etc. throughout the world.

it's especially troubling to me that they're employing the exact same tactics like mass starvation; collective punishment; and ethnic cleansing that they employed in history and people universally accept that those historical episodes were genocides and holocausts, but refuse to apply those same labels to today's episodes; as well as the fact that all of today's episodes are perpetuated by same hegemony as the most recent historical ones.

It's my favourite Gramsci quote if not the most harrowing.

[–] SovietBeerTruckOperator@hexbear.net 15 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I've grown weirdly Zen about this shit.

I've just accepted I don't have any real control over anything and what happens happens. I'm just trying to enjoy myself, been playing a lot of Stardew and drinking wine, rewatching old BOTW episodes I like, taking naps.

If something happens I'll either adapt or die, if nothing happens hopefully I'll be able to keep chugging along.

[–] thirstyskyline@hexbear.net 7 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

I've had more free time and I just check news sites and hex news all the time. Is stardew worth playing? I want new hobbies

[–] BanSwitch2Buyers@hexbear.net 7 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

Stardew's pretty relaxing and it's nice to have a game with a mix of short-term and long-term goals because it feels good to accomplish stuff in it.

[–] 0x2640@hexbear.net 1 points 8 hours ago

stardew is either relaxing or incredibly stressful depending on how you play games, the time limits are evil

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 7 points 19 hours ago

Stardew's pretty relaxing

For you at least, for me the time limits and my own inner perfectionist making me reset over and over again in persuit of the perfect day makes it very stressful for me

Never made it past year 1, still love the game

[–] thirstyskyline@hexbear.net 2 points 19 hours ago

Thanks might check it out. I'll see if I can pirate

Yeah it's pretty good. There's a lot of good cheaper indie games on Steam.

[–] Beetle@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thnx I needed to hear this. Doomscrolling will not help with anything except make me too tired to do anything.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 12 points 23 hours ago

Exactly. Take it easy but take it 🤜🤛

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 14 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

It's so hard. I tell myself consuming won't change anything but if I look away things are changing without me knowing. Politics is one of my main interest.

I do think part of this habit is some of us do genuinely enjoy following events and staying informed. I really don't think mentally it's all that different than following a TV show or whatever, just with the anxiety that what's happening on the screen could end up in your backyard.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Agreed. I don't think its about necessarily ignoring or permanently unplugging, but for example using RSS feeds to get news in a more structured manner, or temporarily uninstalling apps and reinstalling later to catch up on things.

Like, I'm super interested in this stuff too, but also I don't need to know the up to the minute headlines on what is happening on the front lines of Ukraine, or the minute by minute preparations of Iranian ballistic missile bases. But having those apps on my phone during these specific times makes it likely that I'll be refreshing constantly.

In the end it's not about un-informing ourselves but accepting that a small delay in that information will do our souls some benefit.

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I guess RSS is good, forces me to engage weird text and not everyone's observations

[–] T34_69@hexbear.net 2 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

What are some good feeds to subscribe to for anti-imperialist and/or Marxist takes on the news?

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 2 points 10 hours ago

Start with https://popularresistance.org/. They are a news aggregator of anti-imperialist and progressive articles from other anti-imperialist and progressive websites. When you find a good article, go to the original website and subscribe to their RSS feed. You'll rapidly build up your RSS feed.

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 2 points 11 hours ago

I just checked after the first time in months and the only one I'm subscribed to is red sails haha. So I guess that one

[–] thirstyskyline@hexbear.net 3 points 20 hours ago

Yeah exactly. I find it hard to catch up after and the FOMO is biiig

[–] tastemyglaive@lemmy.ml 13 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

Try making an RSS feed and sticking to offbeat or informative sources (avoid AFP, AP, Reuters, Western mainstream media as a whole, or reactionary media anywhere, whatever they say which is actually important will be repeated elsewhere). I can imagine why Telegram and Lemmy would bother you, as many people get invested in a particular interpretation or prediction. This makes it a lot more stressful to figure out what's going on.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 7 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I definitely want to get one at some point and integrate it into my home server. I'll give it a look :)

Instead of doomscrolling, try doom RSSing (rss at the very bottom of the page)

Doomscrolling is a lot like gambling where you keep going, thinking you're going to finally hit something that makes you feel good (or smart or important). It's important to break out of that cycle, because it is addicting.

[–] duderium@hexbear.net 8 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Counterpoint: keep an eye on the news and do whatever you can to help our friends in the Middle East.

[–] CptKrkIsClmbngThMntn@hexbear.net 9 points 21 hours ago

Someone else in this thread said they spent 8 hours a day on their phone when Russia/Ukraine started.

I stay tuned into the news here and check it periodically but if it's hurting your mental health, there's absolutely no reason to be glued into the war minutiae. You don't need hourly updates on which bombs landed where to be informed. You don't need a constant feed of gore to know that Israel is genocidal pariah state and to do whatever you can from thousands of miles away.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 7 points 22 hours ago

Not saying you should ignore the state of the world, or stop talking about it (I've done the opposite today) but social media is not conducive to that effort, even if the face of it may seem informative.

Taking breaks from apps that turn these events into pseudo-entertainment and attention sucking vacuums makes it harder to engage with that.

Of course if it helps to keep on top of news then find ways that are healthier than apps designed to sap our attention. I'll keep lemmy but shit like telegram and bluesky etc. are way easier to get sucked into.

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

weird timing. I was hyperfixating, and it got to a point where I cried. i rarely cry, and yet the cruelty is just too much. justice for palestine ✊️

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 hours ago

Absolutely. Im so numb to the violence but it still overwhelms me. It's good that you still feel that emotion for others, we must always remember that a revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love ❤️
