In your own words - what do you believe a job in cybersecurity entails?
In your current role - in what ways have you interacted with software, cloud or a server’s security?
Ik CS is more programming oriented and I already have regrets in life and wouldn’t want to feel like I’m making the wrong choices and feel I wasted my time on this degree.
I believe cybersecurity entails testing vulnerabilities and applying fixes and helping to make systems much more secure
I have 6 years IT experience (nothing network related) more just fixing hardware and removing viruses.
But my current role is just deploying software to agencies
Which part of cyber security entices you? Because it's a large field and it's like saying you want to be a programmer.
Red Teaming
Offensive security by deliberately picking at something till it breaks and you get shell.
Blue Teaming
Making sure things are patched and up to date, reviewing Nessus or Qualis(?) scan reports and resolving the findings.
Those are 2 examples.
I want to get into ethical hacking and penetrating. Cuz I’ve always thought that is cool and fun. And to help find ways to stop or prevent things like ransomeware.
You could get a few certs to see if you like it. Security+, CISSP, and Certified Ethical Hacker might be some good starter certs.
CISSP is not a starter cert...
CEH is also not really a starter cert, it's like mid weight on the knowledge scale
S+ is a starter cert.
He has a computer science degree. Those should all be starter certs for him.
I have a CS degree, they don't teach you anywhere near what is appropriate for the secops world. College is a basis but it cannot teach you experience.
