Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

To be honest, I don't have much to say about ongoing geopolitical events that hasn't already been said in previous threads (e.g. with India/Pakistan, Trump/Putin, and of course occupied Palestine), so this is more of a "news roundup" preamble for this week.

As we all know, the US (and the imperial core generally) has only three permitted international actions: sanctions, color revolution, and war. None of these have been going well lately, but sanctions are in particularly dire straits right now. Three examples from the last week or so:

  • The EU is on its 17th sanctions package, apparently, which is surprising, as I thought they were on their 76th or something. It apparently targets Russia's shadow fleet of oil tankers, but I don't think anybody actually gives a shit because we all know it won't achieve anything, so, moving on...

  • The head of Nvidia (as well as many others) have come out and said that the US chip export controls on China have failed, remarking that China's internal motivations to develop alternatives are strong and proceeding rapidly, especially as China's number of skilled scientists is only growing. Nvidia has said that they had a 95% share of China's AI chip market in 2020 or so, but now they only have 50%.

  • Lastly, an interesting one: Iran has received its first set of railway shipment of solar panels from China, and there is hope for accelerating shipments of even more products. Myself and many others have predicted a decoupling of Iran from the West and towards China and Russia (especially if any Western-built product could have Israeli devices implanted into them, such as with the pager terrorist attack on Lebanon's doctors), and having a strong link with China will be a necessary step for Iran and their allies to continue their offensives against Israel.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Social media support for accused killers Luigi Mangione, Elias Rodriguez an 'exceptionally bad sign': expert | Fox News

Social media users have been drawing comparisons between online support for accused killers Elias Rodriguez, Rodney Hinton Jr. and Luigi Mangione.

"That people who commit murder are receiving any meaningful amount of public support, seemingly because the victims are seen by the murder’s supporters as belonging to the political opposition, is an exceptionally bad sign for our society," Nicholas Creel, Georgia College and State University ethics professor, told Fox News Digital. "Democracy requires people to be committed to certain values, such as the peaceable resolution of our differences. Without that, we’re at risk for a far wider breakdown in the rule of law, the kind where mass atrocities can easily arise."

omg you guise, can you imagine if we lived in a world with mass atrocities?

[–] Sinisterium@hexbear.net 66 points 3 weeks ago

People still not understanding that most people are peaceful by nature and that support for "violence" is a sign of serious injustices.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 65 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I actually generally agree with the take that people supporting random murder as a form of justice is a sign of severe instability, though of course this dipshit is likely just pearl clutching and fully supports right-wing murderers like Rittenhouse, the cops, and the troops. Never mind that the solutions to this instability (buying people off with the profits of imperial plunder) are impossible under capitalism.

The US-backed concentration camp "aid distribution" scheme in Gaza appears to have collapsed within hours, as crowds became "uncontrollable" and US mercenaries opened fire on the crowds before fleeing. The Palestinian people who the scheme had intended to trap and murder have torn down the camp and seized the aid that was being used as bait. Zionist helicopters have reportedly opened fire into the crowds of people. Very recent and developing situation.

The chapo episode from 23/5 with Grim and Scahill (of Dropsite news) talked about their reporting that this was always the intention. Use the aid (which was to be given to politically vetted individuals) to lure people into a controllable region and then either forcibly displace them or kill them if the optics were "good" enough.

Netanyahu has been openly talking about this to Israeli media per the reporting. I can't time stamp it, but it's within the first 25 minutes of 936. If others have more easily citable sources please link them.

Unfathomably evil. Silence on the matter when the genocide is this loudly broadcasted is approval, anyone who refuses to speak out against "Israel" because "it's complicated" is running smoke and mirrors to obfuscate that they believe this is acceptable.

I am at the point where I no longer know what to say in regards to the news coming out of Gaza. Anything I could say does no justice to the horrors of what is happening here. I feel numb and my lack of words reflects that. This is just as much of an American genocide as it is an Israeli one. I’m not exactly young, but this has crossed the point of being the most evil thing the US has done in my lifetime (saying this as someone who organized protests against the invasion of Iraq in 2003).

The article doesn't come to this conclusion, but it's a clear sign that RFK/his staff are using AI to write reports.

The Guardian: RFK Jr’s ‘Maha’ report found to contain citations to nonexistent studies

The 73-page “Make America healthy again” report – which was commissioned by the Trump administration to examine the causes of chronic illness...includes references to seven studies that appear to be entirely invented, and others that the researchers say have been mischaracterized.

One paper was claimed to show that talking therapy was as effective as psychiatric medication, but the statistician Joanne McKenzie said this was impossible, as “we did not include psychotherapy” in the review.

The sleep researcher Mariana G Figueiro also said her study was mischaracterized, with the report incorrectly stating it involved children rather than college students, and citing the wrong journal entirely.

There isn't a likely cause for a report to contain these types of errors unless an LLM was used to write it.

"I've always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY! He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I'm not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever. I've always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that's proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia! Likewise, President Zelenskyy is doing his Country no favors by talking the way he does. Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don't like it, and it better stop. This is a War that would never have started if I were President. This is Zelenskyy's, Putin's, and Biden's War, not "Trump's," I am only helping to put out the big and ugly fires, that have been started through Gross Incompetence and Hatred."

Climate activist Greta Thunberg to join aid ship effort to break Gaza siege | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Also Liam Cunningham, who played Davis Seaworth in Game of Thrones and the priest who talks with Bobby Sands in Hunger is on the ship too. Legitimately a good idea for famous people to go on this ship. Yeah Israel is bloodthirsty and doesn’t care about global opinion but their position is more precarious by the day, they will need to think twice about doing anything to the ship IMO.

Naomi Klein is a radlib but I’ve been reading her book The Shock Doctrine, and find that it’s quite prescient regarding current events even though it was written ~15 years ago. It’s not exactly in-depth but Klein is a journalist, it’s supposed to be high-level flyover.

The thesis in a nutshell is that there is a compulsion - driven both by ideology and material interests - to outsource and privatize all aspects of governance, despite the desires of the people impacted who usually strongly oppose these changes. Disasters - natural or man-made - are the perfect opportunities to exploit.

I had never realized the extent to which the US military had been outsourced and privatized, thanks primarily to Cheney and Rumsfield. In a theme consistent throughout the book, while these two and others stood to benefit tremendously from military privatization, there also seems to be a significant ideological component. These people I think truly believe the military is more effective and efficient when exposed to market pressures. And we are now seeing the fruits of this privatization, as the supply and inventory issues in the military have become well known with giving support to Ukraine.

Then you see the ongoing impacts of disasters like the tsunami in Sri Lanka and hurricanes in Central America. Capital used these disasters as opportunities to privatize and dispossess. It really does echo Marx’s thoughts on primitive accumulation in Capital, though that’s my connection not Klein’s. And now as we hear about all the current turmoil in these places, no one bothers to connect the dots to how the US, the IMF, World Bank, and even local capitalists eviscerated social services, sold off government assets, and dispossessed locals to current problems.

You can even take this to the present with GHF. Ostensibly a “private charity” that supplants UNRWA and others, but is only really a tool of enforcing imperialism.

@LoveWitch@hexbear.net

Regarding the Russia-China lunar base, it’s just another way for Russia to continue to work on its cool projects through Chinese investment, given that Russia is running out of its money for its space program.

One example is the Zeus TEM, a nuclear propulsion space tug that will enable deep space exploration limited by current chemical rockets. A lot of the work associated with this project has already begun and it would be a waste to discontinue.

This has been in the talks for quite some time now.

From Vedomosti, April 2023:

Borisov: Russia to Use Nuclear Tugboat in Joint Project with China

Roscosmos CEO Yuri Borisov said that Russia will use the nuclear tug Zeus in a joint project with China.

"We are planning to implement it [the nuclear tug] in practice by 2030. This is one of the products that will help in the expansion of the Moon, we are planning to use it in a joint project with China," Borisov said at the educational marathon "Knowledge First" ( quoted by TASS).

In other words, it’s a win-win cooperation between Russia and China - Russia gets to extend the life of its cutting edge projects using Chinese money, while China also gets access to Russian technology in return.

The lunar base itself may or may not happen, but at least there is a common future goal that promotes and facilitates cooperation between the institutions of both countries.

France runs fusion reactor for record 22 minutes

Article text

France has upped the ante in the quest for fusion power by maintaining a plasma reaction for over 22 minutes – a new record. The milestone was reached on February 12 at the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA) WEST Tokamak reactor.

Achieving the dream of commercial fusion power is the Holy Grail of engineering and has been for 80 years. With a single gram of hydrogen isotopes yielding the energy equivalent of 11 tonnes of coal, a practical fusion reactor would hold the promise of unlimited, clean energy for humanity until the end of time.

Small wonder that billions have been invested by both government and industry in the quest to make fusion power a reality. However, while fusion is relatively easy to achieve in the heart of the sun or in a hydrogen bomb, creating a practical reactor that produces more energy than is put into it is another matter entirely.

The tricky bit isn't to get atoms to fuse. That's a fairly simple lab bench experiment. The problem is creating the right conditions where the fusion reaction is self-sustaining, with a net energy output. That means reaching temperatures of between 100 – 150 million °C (180 – 270 million °F, or 3-5 times hotter than the Sun's core), a pressure of five to 10 atmospheres at the point of reaction, and keeping a high-energy plasma stable for at least 10 seconds.

The CEA seems to have done considerably better than 10 seconds and gone 25% beyond what China achieved in January 2025 with 1,066 seconds. In the latest test, the WEST Tokamak held its reaction for 1,337 seconds.

The purpose of the test wasn't just to keep the plasma reaction going like a stage performer spinning plates. It was also to keep the reaction stable without the components in the reactor facing the plasma becoming eroded or polluted, or malfunctioning.

According to CEA, the next step will be to create even longer reactions that could amount to a combined time of several hours, with the temperature growing increasingly hotter. Though WEST will never become a true commercial reactor, the information gathered there will be used to improve more ambitious machines, like the giant International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) being built in the south of France.

"WEST has achieved a new key technological milestone by maintaining hydrogen plasma for more than twenty minutes through the injection of 2 MW of heating power," said Anne-Isabelle Etienvre, Director of Fundamental Research at the CEA. "Experiments will continue with increased power. This excellent result allows both WEST and the French community to lead the way for the future use of ITER."

EDIT: How did I forget to check the date when this came out? This is actually from February!

Israel just carried out airstikes on Yemen, in Sana'a International Airport, destroying a Yemenia Airlines Airbus A320-200 half an hour after landing.

Yemenia has a fleet of four of these aircraft in active service (now three), two from 2011, and two that they've leased in 2023. The leased aircraft fly out of Sana'a, while the aircraft that they own themselves fly out of Aden. A previous Israeli airstrike this month heavily damaged the airport and it's terminal, and destroyed three aircraft, their sole Airbus A330-200, a Boeing 727, and an Ilyushin Il-76. It was initially thought these three aircraft were A-320s before the images were released. Ansarallah/the Houthis in Yemen reopened the airport by patching up the runway and temporarily constructing a makeshift terminal. Given the state of the temporarily reopened terminal and runway (the wreckage of the destroyed aircraft was still visible in the background), it was questionable just how the functional the airport was, though it was enough for the one or two flights a day to Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
