Wonder if it has anything to do with the north Atlantic current?

A lot of garbage gets picked up by the current and deposited on beaches. A lot of mapping of the current happened when a container of Lego fell off a ship and washed to shore over decades. They have been talking about the Atlantic current collapsing due to climate change and the melting of Greenland glaciers. I wonder if less garbage correlates to less current.

Here's an article about the Lego. It doesn't talk about mapping, but I seem to remember reading that people were studying it. https://www.toronto.com/news/a-bit-of-nostalgia-rare-lego-piece-found-after-being-lost-in-atlantic-ocean-for/article_5ec3be6c-50ed-5129-84bb-e399299d862f.html

Ironically, the Lego inside was mostly sea-themed, for kits including Lego Pirates and Lego Aquazone

I was wondering because I was on the west coast of Canada on Haida Gwaii and all the garbage I found was from Asia. I found a bottle of Korean Head and Shoulders and the guy I was staying with was using Japanese dish soap that he found washed up.

I love how you can just ask this question on Lemmy, and people give great replies. I do it often, and learn so much.

Did it just turn to microplastics?

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Micro plastics form from all types of plastic very slowly. It a kind of shedding of the plastic as it breaks down but can also happen faster with abrasion.

For example each time you use a toothbrush the plastic bristles shed micro plastics, or each time you open a plastic water bottle microplastics are released.

When a plastic bottle ends up in the ocean it will circulate for a long time, releasing microplastics, and also slowly disintegrating into multiple peices.
