"Love labor, hate mastery over others, and avoid a close relationship with the government" (Avot, 1:10)

"Anti-Semitism means spreading enmity towards the Jews. When the accursed tsarist monarchy was living its last days it tried to incite ignorant workers and peasants against the Jews. The tsarist police, in alliance with the landowners and the capitalists, organised pogroms against the Jews. The landowners and capitalists tried to divert the hatred of the workers and peasants who were tortured by want against the Jews. In other countries, too, we often see the capitalists fomenting hatred against the Jews in order to blind the workers, to divert their attention from the real enemy of the working people, capital. Hatred towards the Jews persists only in those countries where slavery to the landowners and capitalists has created abysmal ignorance among the workers and peasants. Only the most ignorant and downtrodden people can believe the lies and slander that are spread about the Jews. This is a survival of ancient feudal times, when the priests burned heretics at the stake, when the peasants lived in slavery, and when the people were crushed and inarticulate. This ancient, feudal ignorance is passing away; the eyes of the people are being opened.

It is not the Jews who are the enemies of the working people. The enemies of the workers are the capitalists of all countries. Among the Jews there are working people, and they form the majority. They are our brothers, who, like us, are oppressed by capital; they are our comrades in the struggle for socialism. Among the Jews there are kulaks, exploiters and capitalists, just as there are among the Russians, and among people of all nations. The capitalists strive to sow and foment hatred between workers of different faiths, different nations and different races. Those who do not work are kept in power by the power and strength of capital. Rich Jews, like rich Russians, and the rich in all countries, are in alliance to oppress, crush, rob and disunite the workers.

Shame on accursed tsarism which tortured and persecuted the Jews. Shame on those who foment hatred towards the Jews, who foment hatred towards other nations.

Long live the fraternal trust and fighting alliance of the workers of all nations in the struggle to overthrow capital." - V. I. Lenin, Anti-Jewish Pogroms

Etta Federn was bornon April 28th 1883 in Vienna, the youngest daughter of an assimilated Jewish family. She was the daughter of the suffragette Ernestine Federn and the doctor Salomon Federn and the sister of Paul, who became an analyst, Karl, who became a lawyer and writer, and Walter who became a journalist.

She had an education on an equal footing with her brothers. She studied literary history, German and Greek literature. After graduation she began to study German and philosophy. In addition, she received a broad education in foreign languages.

She broke with her family and moved to Berlin, where she completed her studies with a thesis on Faust. She earned her living there first as a teacher and then as a translator from English, French, Danish, Russian and Yiddish. She translated Alexandra Kollontai, Hans Christian Anderson and Shakespeare.

She worked as a literary critic for the newspaper Berliner Tageblatt. She published many biographies including those of Dante and Goethe. At the same time she began to write essays, biographies, autobiographical, stories, a play and poems. She married twice, both marriages ending in separation.

She made contact with the anarchist movement in Berlin and began to participate in the activities of the German anarcho-syndicalist union the FAUD (Free Workers' Union of Germany - Freie Arbeiter Union Deutschlands), contributing articles to its press on a regular basis. She began to make many friends within this movement.

The anarchist movement in Berlin attracted in Etta’s own words many “self-motivated Jewish women who offered their intellectual, emotional and political support to the ideas of social revolution, free education, the importance of cultural work, women’s emancipation and the importance of solidarity and responsible behaviour”.

She met Emma Goldman, Mollie Steimer, and Sonia Flechin, among others. In particular, she maintained a close friendship with Rudolf Rocker and Milly Witkop for life. She took an active part in the women’s organisation founded by the FAUD, the Syndikalistischen Frauenbund -Syndicalist Women’s Organisation (SFB).

She received death threats from the Nazis as a result of her biography of the liberal politician Walter Rathenau, murdered by right wing officers, which was published in 1927. In addition the forces of reaction put pressure on the newspapers and publishing houses she usually wrote for, so that her sources of income began to dry up.

She left Germany for Barcelona in 1932, at the age of 49 with her two sons. In 1933 her books were amongst those destroyed during the Nazi public book burnings and she was placed on the Nazi blacklist.

In Barcelona she received continuing support from the anarchist circles still in Berlin, and in turn she was able to welcome those fleeing to Berlin later. She was able to adapt quickly to Barcelona, writing articles for the Spanish press within weeks and starting to learn Catalan. However, she remained financially straitened, and had to rely on small but regular transfers of money from her close relatives in the USA.

During the Spanish revolution she joined Mujeres Libres (Free Women), the anarchist women’s movement, in July 1936. She taught literature, language and education at the cultural centre set up by Mujeres Libres, the House of the Woman Worker, was based on the teachings of the Spanish libertarian educationalist, Francisco Ferrer.

Later , in 1937, she founded, in collaboration with Mujeres Libres, four libertarian schools in the Catalan city of Blanes. These schools, of which she was the director, trained teachers as well as teaching children. They were co-educational, with an orientation towards atheism and antimilitarism, and designed to have an anxiety free, stimulating and caring atmosphere for children.

In May 1937 she returned to Barcelona and had her book Mujeres de las Revoluciones , which included biographical sketches of twelve famous women, published by Mujeres Libres.

In 1938, because of the massive bombing raids on Barcelona she left for Paris with her two sons.

Between 1940-1945 she moved to Lyons. She was by now completely exhausted physically and sometimes seriously ill. Despite this, she engaged in resistance work through translations, propaganda work and organisation.

Her oldest son Hans died in 1944 in the fighting at Vercors. Paradoxically it was because of this that she became entitled to French nationality and a small monthly pension, although she remained in poverty until her death in Paris ion May 9th, 1951.

She features as a literary personality in a novel of the Swedish anarchist writer Stig Dagerman (who had married the German anarchist Annemarie Goetze) Skuggen av Mart (Stockholm 1947) and in Utan Vaiaktig stad (Stockholm 1948) the novel of another Swedish writer, Arne Fosberg.

Tried learning a bit of american sign language today, I got apple, banana but then I was lost when we suddenly went to barely and I started getting flashbacks to the hand signs they weave in naruto. Fucking hell don't just move on like that I got whiplash kitty-cri-screm

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

How do you sign beanis this is very important question

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 4 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Damn I learned bean in Mandarin earlier if I kept going past barely I would have learned this boohoo

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 4 points 15 hours ago

Oh my gosh I just looked up the sign for bean in ASL it's adorable. You hold out your indext finger, and then tap up and down over it with the index of your other hand while moving forwards. I'm guessing it's noting the beans in the pod.

By comparison, the Auslan sign is less fun. You have the same first hand with index finger extended to show the pod, but the other hand pinches above the index finger and slides backwards to show you're opening the pod.

I accepted that my friend doesn’t reciprocate feelings I have towards her. I have no idea why one of the Zoloft’s effects is I suddenly feel bad about it. Like the feelings never went away but I was fine with them, and now I’m not.

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 3 points 14 hours ago

It's okay, it's just grief. You'll move on. You might have to cut the friendship down for a bit to help move on, or maybe you won't.

My mom’s communication style is exhausting in exactly the same way slack or teams notifications are. She will ask a bunch of questions but like end the conversation at each one by walking away and walking back a bit later. It’s too much mental switching. Like 4 questions in I need a nap.

Was having small talk with a coworker, I was talking about how oreo ice cream sandwiches are like crack. He was like oh yeah I loved oreos until I found out baby fetuses are in them. Then I went silent and just walked away

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 12 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

I mean if I heard there were baby fetuses in my oreos I would probably quit eating them too

Wait until he finds out what's inside a hot dog.

In hindsight me never running Sudowoodo isn't too shocking. Dunsparce, Fearow, and Qwilfish are some of my favorite Pokes. I'm usually rocking a full team by the third gym.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 3 points 16 hours ago

Qwimfish is really good

I read a bit about Sheng Shicai and he just seems insane.

He took over Xinjiang, had friendly relations with the Soviet Union including getting help suppressing a rebelling general that wanted to found “East Turkestan”, did a purge mirroring Stalin’s, and worked with the CPC to restaff his government with CPC bureaucrats. He might have been award the Order of Lenin but the wording was weird and might be talking about someone else. Overall seemed alright, right?

Then when Germany invaded the Soviets, he flipped. He pledged loyalty to the KMT government, kicked out the Soviets, and cracked down on CPC members, including executing Mao Zedong’s brother who was part of a Soviet plot to overthrow Sheng.

Then when the Nazis got BTFOd in Stalingrad and Kursk while Japan was winning against the KMT, he tried to flip back. He ordered the arrest of KMT personnel, telling Stalin that they were Japanese spies while telling Chiang that they were communists. Stalin told him to fuck off and the KMT removed him from power. He was given a powerless ministerial post in the KMT congress and fled to Taiwan with them.

The funny thing is Stalin actually saw through him at the very beginning:

Stalin commented that the Sheng's letter made a "depressing impression on our comrades". The content of Sheng's letter led Stalin to refer him as "a provocateur or a hopeless "leftist" having no idea about Marxism". In a reply to Sheng, Stalin, Molotov and Voroshilov refused all of his proposals.

Annoying to live in current year, and your out-of-state employer not only does paper checks, but mails them out late like bills have flexible due dates or some shit

My online friend said he sent me a christmas gift. The Canada Post strike happened and I assume it was something he actually shipped himself so that would mean it'd go through Canada Post here as international mail, I think. Months go by and nothing and I ask him what's up. He mentions it's Amazon and the site says "likely delivered" or something. So if it was Amazon it would have been done through private companies most likely and I never got it. He's unwilling to follow it up more than that for some reason. It's Amazon, dude, just say "they didn't get it." Or at least try to get a refund. Fucking stupid.

He also had his bank account accessed somehow to buy shit on Tiktok or something. So he calls them to cancel it and stuff. They froze the account and all that and need to do an investigation and set up a new account for him. The person that did this forgot to transfer the transaction history of the old account so the investigation stalled because they kept going "i see nothing wrong here" when he asked them what's up. Eventually a manager stepped in when he went there in-person like a week later but the entire time he was so dopey and passive about it. The person working at the bank is living a comfier life than you and this is just a bad work day, at most, for them, this a bad month or more for you.

Don't be afraid to yell at some fucks. Jesus. People are getting fucked constantly and going "Well, I wouldn't want to seem like a karen/boomer" over shit that's actually worth complaining about.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 4 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

I remember with WoW a big thing was apparently you kinda started to actually play the game once you've beaten the game, what about a game that's a single player rpg that becomes an MMO but only in post-game? Could do a red and blue version sorta thing where after you beat the game you're then on one team or the other for the online bit. Make the single player quest the journey to some kinda place and you gradually find out it's being fought over or whatever and then when you get there you gotta fight over it. Still gotta drop a ton of hours before multi-player but you don't have to do lame mmo quests

[–] GeneralSwitch2Boycott@hexbear.net 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

That'd be cool, yeah. A Matrix MMO like that where it's singleplayer until you break out of the Matrix and meet up with other people to discover that every single person's been the only conscious human in solo-instances the whole time or something could be cool. Or some similar story about people trapped in isolation combing at the end to overcome their problems in a massively multiplayer thing would be neat.

Conclave-heads, what's the vibe? I checked in on the tradcaths today and they seem to be dooming so I'm guessing it really does look like Tagle or Parolin are on the up-and-up.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Tangle and Parolin are still the favorites in think chuds have been coping because conservatives only make like 1/5 of the conclave so they would need the support of the centrists and the bergoglianos who are pro-pope francis so its unrealistic for their guy to win

here is a division of the conclave

as you can see the reformists only needs like a few centrists to nominate a pope

The Japan Socialist Party had been an unhappy marriage between far-left socialists, centrist socialists and right socialists who had been forced together in order to oppose the consolidation of conservative parties into the Liberal Democratic Party in 1955.

from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Inejir%C5%8D_Asanuma#Decline_of_the_Japan_Socialist_Party

wth is a 'right socialist'?

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 6 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Conservatives who support a welfare state (Paternalistic conservatives/prussian socialism) and reformists (Social democrats)
The tem originates with marx coining of the terms bourgeois socialism and conservative socialism.
In Japan it specifically refers to an old social democratic anti communist party

VTuber postingDamn, it feels so weird that Gura is gone. I never really followed her (Council/Promise was really the gen that got me into Holo), but she's been the face of EN VTubing for nearly 5 years now--the completely undisputed most popular English VTuber, the only one who could actually trade blows with the HoloJP juggernauts. There was no one before her with that kind of an audience and I honestly doubt anyone will come close. Not that no one will ever match her numbers again, necessarily, but I don't think anyone will ever stand head and shoulders above everyone else in the field like she did.

And that's probably a good thing. Can't imagine how scary that must have been. Had it been me, I probably would have quit and gone into the woods, so I'm amazed she stuck it out this long. Hope she's able to find a more low-key way to still have fun on the internet, or just find something fulfilling outside of cyberspace.

It's labour day (Mayday/vappu) here tomorrow. Made me so sad to find out that there are officially no commies whatsoever present for the march this time, but the sucdems and natoleft will be giving the union sanctioned speeches.

The fash is also planning their own march and there is an anti-fascist counter march planned by a group who calls themselves "The Red flag".

Also got the latest "newspaper" from the only tiny group of commies that calls themselves ML and it featured a large article about how China is entirely revisionist and doing socialism the wrong way. ooooooooooooooh

But still, happy Mayday! cat-com
