I get what you're saying, but the Republicans wouldn't have had the OPPORTUNITY to escalate like this if not for the previous administration(s) further normalizing persecution of anti-genocide speech and lost the election partly because of Harris refusing to distance herself from that.
I am leaning towards them doing this regardless of what the Democrats did. Look at all the other norms that they have broken that was not preceded by something that Biden or Democratic administration did.
What allowed and gave them the courage to do this was their confidence that they could act fast enough to enact project 2025 andnhabing all the pieces in place like the supreme court.

And yeah, even fascists need the Overton Window to shift ever rightwards for a long time in order to amass the popularity needed. Dem leadership were complicit in that through the ratchet effect and generally working for the owner donors more than for the voters.
Dem leadership with their "bipartisanship, flowery speeches, and not upsetting the wealthy donors too much is more important than substance" approach have been gradually and consistently ceding ground to right wing demagoguery with no basis in factual reality since 1980 at the latest.

I think people are blaming the Dems too much and not looking at why they did not vote, with reasons ranging to not being in a swing state or Kamala not being compelling. Why does a person need to be compelling when the other party was saying authoritarian, racist and mysognistics things?

With voting presenting significant difficulty for tens of millions of people, you HAVE to do better than "slightly better than the least bad fascists" to drive turnout, ESPECIALLY in a time where incumbency us a disadvantage and your incumbent BARELY scraped a victory in the last election.

I have to say the point where you say I am sounding like a republican, yet the one thing they do constantly is blame others constantly for their failures, something I would hope the dem voters or non voters to not fail at. The fact that the Reoublican campaign messaging was pretty blatant in their authoritarian, mysognistic and racist messaging speaks volumes for the voters who did not vote or voted for Trump. That is a failure on them.
Like I said earlier if one side is that blatant in their cruel hate yet the other side was not “compellng”, the US definitely deserves what its reaping right now.
That's exactly the reason why laws for more surveillance, more repression, harsher sentencing, etc. are ALWAYS a trap. They can always redefine what makes you liable. And at some point they will.
Republicans are always moving more to the right, while democrats are always ignoring their progressive side, while also moving more to the right, as the moderate side attempts to meet republicans in "the middle ground," a target always moving to the right.
