A lot of news and online users are talking about the political timeline/nature of it but this is a culmination of a years-long project phase. It's not a pie-in-the-sky campaign pledge that Trudeau dreamed up on the back of a napkin (like Ford's 401 tunnel). Though it is still at a stage it can still be shut down and we'll be back to square one again.

It should be obvious that because the government is prorogued, Trudeau cannot go out and commit funds to these projects if they were not already approved during his term.

Maybe people don't see the link because of the sudden branding change, but this is what became of what was originally the High Frequency Rail proposal. The three consortiums passing the Request for Qualifications were tasked to propose a solution weighed what speeds the trains should go at. High-frequency without being competitive with driving and flying would not spur that much demand. Note that hfr-tgf.ca now redirects to altotrain.ca.

This consternation is a bit infuriating to me. With the mindset of the timing always being too "political", no big project that is over 4-5 years in timeline is ever going to get done. I would like to see the three proposals publicly released so it can be proved that options were presented based on things asked far before this campaign, and the most sound option was selected.

Yeah, its too little too late for Trudeau, but Carney can run with it.

Canada doesn't need a small pp

It’s a tradition in Canadian politics to drop BS promises on your way out the door. It’s frankly embarrassing that they’re still doing it.

This project has been in the cards for a while now, they were ready for the announcement last fall but you know, shit kinda happened at the same time.

If you follow the news cycle you must remember that they were talking about it months ago.

Too little too late. There was plenty of opportunity to push train and cycling infrastructure before he burned his reputation and shifted into yolo mode.

Canadian politicians are just as self serving and corrupt as the US.

As much as I love choo choo’s this is not happening, he is just dropping this in Carney’s lap and leaving.

I know it is an attempt to buy Quebec voters and I live in Saskatchewan so I would never benefit from these choo choo’s but it is a move to buy votes.

The extra revenues would benefit you through taxes.

Get a project like that started and it opens the door for more and more of them.
