The urge to ask “is this a bit?” is incredibly strong right now. I do think it’s a good idea, though.

Hahaha ♥️ no it's not a bit.
Are you doing a bit tho?
I’m not doing a bit! If I were doing a bit I would have just asked if you were doing a bit, but I felt it was a little too on the nose in this context. Temptation was there, though.
Haha I was doing a bit asking though! Going for the recursive loop. Thanks for taking it seriously and answering sincerely though
As someone who likes to do bits with a straight face to rile up the more earnest people in my life, I consider it proper etiquette to admit to doing a bit the moment someone either takes the bait fully or asks if I’m being serious. It’s sort of like catch and release fishing, but instead of fish it’s people who aren’t terminally irony poisoned.
Yeah I sort of have the same attitude. Dead-pan sarcasm can be incredibly funny, but you should not leave people hanging in doubt.
recursive bit clarification
We'll need a bit clarification parse tree, and a semantic bit analyzer, and a bit symbol table, and...
i'm starting to feel like it is
I promise it is not
Me 5 years ago enjoying big big sarcasm and irony posting:
Now knowing there is 5+ years of chapo/hexbear inside jokes, gags, lore that's practically developed into a niche proto-language:
Sokath, his eyes uncovered.
Pretty reasonable. I don't like using tone indicators, even though I know they are helpful for some, because I love ambiguity. I love the richness of possibility of meaning.
But if somebody asks me outright for clarification of my meaning, I'll generally answer honestly.
Your angle is good enough for me.
I've seen you fuck with liberals by pretending to agree with them until they veer off the road.
no more half measures walter
is this a bit
And keep the change, ya filthy animal!
i agree, especially to people spreading misinformation as a joke.
if the user is from here assume bit if the user is from elsewhere assume sus
That's what I do, but some people here do be posting unhinged takes
Agreed!
This is a bit:
This is not a bit:
"I don't know, that depends on whether people get mad at me"
Or when you don't understand how a kilogram of steel weighs the same as a kilogram of feathers, and when it becomes obvious that everyone else understands and is confused at how you're confused, the only way you can preserve a shred of dignity is to say you're doing a bit
I like this
I like this, whether the person who made the original comment responds to confirm whether it's a bit or not (they may make a gag then just go do sth else, leaving you in the lurch), I imagine it would encourage other users to respond, too. Good suggestion <3
I find a lot of bits exhausting unless they're clearly labeled even if that doesn't make me as irony-poisoned-cool as some internet people would otherwise demand of me.
I think what exhausts me is when I ask "is this a bit" and I either get mocked for asking, it's assumed I'm asking in bad faith or I get a bit answer.
When one posts "I unironically think we should actually just kill every single english person" and I then ask "are you doing a bit? Sometimes people use unironically ironically" and they then answer "no, not a bit" but it is a bit, I get fucking exhausted.
Some of my least favorite experiences in internet conversation that didn't involve outright stalking or other exceptionally fucked up shit involved "you didn't get my very le clever very le ironic joke, you are stupid and bad" victory lapping that goes on for basically forever afterward for that particular irony-poisoned anti-comedian.
fuck our ND comrades I guess.
Do you have any particular comms youd like this for? List them, and if I mod any, I'll make a thread tomorrow putting it to a vote (its 2AM here and insomnia is a fuck so please remind me).
its 2AM here and insomnia is a fuck so please remind me.
Haha yeah I've been on the same train for a while now myself. I've started journaling and then some light stretching half an hour before bed, and that does a lot.
Do you have any particular comms youd like this for?
I don't have any particular I was thinking of, I was thinking it would be site-wide like the disengage rule. In general I find it a bit hard to keep up when different Comms have different rules, so I try to just think of them all as general rules.
But I appreciate the sentiment, and if nothing else happens I'd love to see it implemented in your Comms at least, though I'd prefer it to be site-wide.
We can have tags like /b for "bit" and /b for "being sincere"
for future reference if i ever ask if something is a bit, i want you to flip a coin and answer me based on that
Coin boys
I live by the coin and I die by the coin
Am I allowed to answer...
no this is not a bit
But it's really a bit?
It's always a bit btw.
If this rule were in effect, then no. You would have to give a clear and obvious answer to the question, if you responded to it.
Ya that's why I added side-eye-1.
I think it's important to remember that not everybody knows what the hundreds of meme images used here mean.
I understood, but that would make the answer unclear, so that's why I said that no such an answer would not be acceptable.
I get what you are communicating, but if the purpose is to make it easy for a user having issues to parse tone over text, then that would not work, since they would still be in doubt.
