Doesn’t really matter, Tesla doesn’t make money from selling cars. They make money from selling EV carbon credits to other car manufacturers. Plus collecting government subsidies.

Musk’s new plan seems to be just draining the treasury into his overseas bank accounts.

[–] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 22 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Ok but what happens when the for realsies auto companies start churning out cheaper, better EVs?

Those credits plummet in value because Tesla isn’t the only company with the money printer.

They get tariff'd to the stratosphere if they're not owned by American oligarchs, and the prices are kept high even if production costs are low to protect high profit margins if they are owned by American oligarchs.

[–] gila@lemm.ee 3 points 2 weeks ago

Who do you think is buying the carbon credits? ICE manufacturers.

They do so to be in compliance with offset programs in states like CA without actually changing what cars they make. Because that's cheaper.

Too bad Chinese EVs are basically banned in the West

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 36 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Chinese EVs dominate the Latin American market lol

"people of golf"

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 20 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Some of my coworkers and I did the math and they're still cheaper than pretty much every US EV we could buy even with the 100% tariff.

[–] Monk3brain3@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

In the holy free market there would be no competition. But if this makes people buy too many Chinese EVs I imagine tariffs will just go up. The same tired old response by western capital. It's hilarious because capital slowly took apart the nation state and thereby totally crippled the national system. The same system they used to benefit from the public funding of. The pipeline was public funding for research that was then passed off at a fraction of the cost to the "innovators" and privatized. And they broke the system themselves. Truly the greatest minds of our generation.

coupled with that and knowing the west's ultimate allegiance, maybe it's not such a bad idea for musk to lead the way...

[–] Monk3brain3@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

He's doing great work breaking the system. And he doesn't even seem to realize it

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I want to buy a used Mexican one

[–] Biggay@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I think you would have to pay the 100% tariff if you crossed the border with it. Also dont even know if theyre street certified/legal in the US/

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I feel like there is some loophole. Was it Nebraska people used to launder tuned cars through?

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Also dont even know if theyre street certified/legal in the US/

I used to think that but apparently the cybertruck didn't need to be crash-tested so maybe?

[–] Hohsia@hexbear.net 38 points 2 weeks ago

Too bad Tesla stock is detached from reality and absurdly overvalued

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 33 points 2 weeks ago

dude really wanted to do a full blown Henry Ford speed run, but instead has done a Hanky Fart.

TV2 just posted an article about a Tesla owner who (according to herself) had her car's windshield cracked and was given a fake ticket — apparently a lot of Tesla owners are being given these fake tickets, but not many (if any) experience actual damage to their cars. Nevertheless TV2 presenting these drivers sympathetically as victims of a "witch-hunt" (hets) makes me want to play the world's smallest violin.

The ticket reads,

Akershus County Municipality

Sanction

Violation of ethical consumption duties: Use of a car produced by Tesla, which is owned by Hitler sympathizer Elon Musk.

Boycott Tesla!

DON'T SUPPORT NAZIS!

Edit: Clarifying that the cracking actually being related to the ticket is questionable.

[–] crime@hexbear.net 25 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Are they sure the cracking was related? Tesla windshields just do that sometimes

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The article says "She believes the crack is related [...]" (emphasis mine) — so it could just be a coincidence.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Nah a person didn't make that crack

It would be bigger and spiderwebbed

Also auto glass is really hard to crack without special tools and anyone who does have a special tool would have shattered it completely. Like you have to hit it 3-4 times hard in the same place with a big ass rock just to crack it

[–] invo_rt@hexbear.net 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

special tools

One big, tough tempered piece of glass vs a handful of broken spark plug pieces

joker-troll

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah that's what I mean

Or one of those safety hammers

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I love this actually. Feel bad for well meaning libs who bought these things 5 years ago though

A little

[–] radio_free_asgarthr@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

Nearly every Tesla I see around my town has the "I bought this before we knew Elon was crazy" sticker. I think to prevent things like this.

Anyone paying attention knew what he was the whole time. Libs are aggressively ignorant. Its hard to feel bad when they're doing the whole plug their ears when people mention the truth

[–] DivineChaos100@hexbear.net 29 points 2 weeks ago

That meme where the baby is on fire while its mom is on the puter and the baby is labeled tesla and the mom says "not now honey, mommy is bullying the department of education"

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 26 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

He's still rich and will be insulated from any consequences of his actions.

One thing about Musk I've noticed is that he is a risk taker. I don't want to sound like I'm praising him, but it's just an objective fact. Whenever he makes a decision to do something he throws everything at it. Those decisions are really stupid most of the time, and if a person of average wealth ever tried to do them they would just fail outright, but Musk is able to get away with it through some luck but also just the capitalist system working in his favor. When he jumped on board the Trump train, I had a feeling Trump was going to win because of how Musk risks everything to get what he wants.

I think alot of liberals and maybe some leftists are hoping that he'll get "caught on a technicality" but hes probably never going to lose his wealth or diminish in influence unless acted on externally. The rules and laws of capitalist society are the ones that prop him up. That's what I think of when I see these headlines that make it seem like the walls are closing in on him because Tesla sales are down, or he did a nazi salute, or called someone a pedo etc.

Alternatively he could Steve Jobs himself, but that is relying on pure chance.

[–] SchillMenaker@hexbear.net 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It would take another billionaire to snap his neck in one of the traps he keeps sticking it out in and they have too much class solidarity for that. Or one of the other Mario Brothers to hit him with a fireball.

[–] Sphere@hexbear.net 16 points 2 weeks ago

I'd argue he's more on the Matthew Perry track than the Steve Jobs one. Either way, it leads to the same place (but far too slowly)

[–] HelluvaBottomCarter@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago

I hope he starts suing people for not buying his cars.

[–] BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

Swasticar kelly

(I didn't come up with this but I wish I did)

[–] BeanBoy@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

The Market just does this. It is the Economy. It cannot be comprehended by the human mind.
