Windwaker has my favorite portrayal of Ganondorf.

He's made out to be human, sympathetic almost. While he may be misguided in choosing his methods, his actual motivation isn't. Thru his background story we come to learn why he behaves the way he does. He's tragically misguided, not mindlessly evil.

All the more I felt for him thusly when he gets cheated out of the fruits of his labor near the very end based on some technicality he couldn't possibly have foreseen. It's notable how only at this point, he flies into rage and draws his swords to destroy his enemies.

whoever touches it first is a realistic portrayal of how power works in our world.

but how you react to being thwarted?

Ganondorf chooses a violent coup and genocide.

now I agree with you that his evil isn't mindless, and I also wouldn't call it evil myself, but his judgment and actions can't be excused regardless of his original intentions.

There’s been much back and forth discussion over the years on Ganandorf from OoT to Wind Waker. I think the general consensus is that he paints himself the victim, but he’s kind of full of it (WW dorf also happens to be my favorite). Once he got power in OoT he never actually helped his people. You’d think the desert would have been a paradise and that the final battle would take place there, but it doesn’t. We’ve also seen the Geurdo people thrive without him now in many games, he could have easily used his gained power to change things for his people.
