South African rescuers have so far pulled 78 bodies and rescued 166 people from the Stilfontein gold mine over three days of operations, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe told reporters at the scene on Wednesday.

"Our mandate was to combat criminality and that is exactly what we've been doing," she said. "By providing food, water and necessities to these illegal miners it would be the police entertaining and allowing criminality to thrive."
