MODERATORS

I tried replying to the first message in this community but it seems like Post a reply is buggy/ lagging.

When I started this instance there were no other aviation or flying communities. I’ll make more of an effort to get these here going.

I think the dedicated domain gives you a leg up over the other aviation communities. It says that you're serious about being a hub for aviation related conversation.

Not sure how much you want to go into the simulation categories, but I would like to see communities for VATSIM and maybe one for simpit/homecockpit builders.

Good idea! You’re free to create them :)

That'd be amazing. We need more avgeeks on here!

when the reddit blackout is over, if r/flying and r/aviation open back up on reddit, there needs to be some sort of post made. or several. this instance has a great name to be a hub for the aviation community of all sorts on the fediverse, and leaching off those already established subreddits and their engagement is the way to make things here pop off. we are not linked to many other instances and are going to need to basically build the community up from the ground. but, lemmyfly.org has the potential to be the hotspot for aviation and flying.

hell, let the shitheads at r/shittyaskflying and r/planesgonewild in on it as well. i like them too.

I agree. Do you think we should mention lemmyfly on reddit?

[–] Podunk@lemmyfly.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

absolutely. and also on mastadon, twitter, and any forums or aviation facebook pages you know of. we have basically no community right now. without volume, we have nothing but five people on a random internet page. the structure of the community will form after you get people.

will you necessarily like it when the people show up? idk. but without engagement, you have a dead end domain with nothing of value. so start with inviting people that have an interest in what you are creating, and go from there. the worst thing that happens is they go to another instance. and if that instance is more successful and more interesting, you and i will be there as well eventually.

people of similar interests will congregate somewhere. the job we have here, right now, is to say quite literally, "we are here and you should be too". that is step one. we are existing in a very rare and interesting time in regards to the creation and development of a niche community, one that hasn't been seen in a while, and to be honest, for all the endless anarchy of the internet, may not happen again for a very long time. take advantage of it.

Yes, I’ll drop the name some more. If all 20-something member bring in 5 we’re already at 100. So can you all help out?

I’m not a very experienced reddittor, but I am a aviation fan (and started gliding some months ago now) and work in webdevelopment so I grabbed the opportunity when I saw it to set up a server and try to start a community aviation-related. The server has good capacity now, should be able to handle a lot more traffic. And I’ll be upgrading when it needs to.

But I can use the help! If you are interested in moderating, let me know. And help in spreading the name.

I’ve mentioned lemmyfly in a reaction on r/flying. Can you help out in spreading the word?

Can't wait to participate here more :)

Here's to hoping we grow into a solid community!

I've had problems replying in the web interface, clicking on "Post" just turned the button into a spinny circle that just sat there for hours. Replying in the "Jerboa for Lemmy" app on android worked (even though the app is still early beta). I'll try this again in the browser.

EDIT: ok, seems to work. (Firefox on Windows, logged in to feddit.de)

I looked at the server logs while clicking Post on the reply and noticed the reason: the language was not allowed (i hadnt selected any language). Settingn it to english it was posted right away

It'll help if the r/flying mods can link to lemmyfly.org from the "gone private" banner. It's hard to find a reddit alternative, so without this discoverability will limit how quickly this community can grow.

I didn't want to post it there going against the No self promotion rule
