A wild #FolktaleMoment, if ever I read one.

On a wild island he meets a woman whose upper portion is like a fish and below like a human. She asks if he will have her. “No, I can’t have you, the way you’re formed,” says the boy. Later he meets another, whose nether portions are like a fish and upper like a human being. “Yes, since there are no other folk here, then I may as well have you,” says the boy.

“Oh yes, you may certainly have me,” says the woman, “for I own the gilded castle. But first you must lie in my chamber with me for three nights.”

Woohoo!

Drowning would have been a welcome relief, for the tale continues: "After the first night, the boy thinks he can keep it up if things don’t get any worse. After the second he feels as if he has been torn to pieces. On the third night he is torn in pieces – joint by joint"

@SimonRoyHughes Oof. Yeah, a fish's upper half wouldn't have been able to tear him into pieces (depending on the fish's face I guess. Teeth?).

But it's hard to feel bad for someone when one of their first thoughts on a wild island is "there has to be something I can fuck, but the face can't look like a fish".

@a_mac_and_con @folklore @folklorethursday Oh no, the mermaid doesn't hurt him. She's the one he's out to save.

@SimonRoyHughes Ah, gotcha. What's the name of the tale?

[–] SimonRoyHughes@thefolklore.cafe 1 points 2 years ago

@a_mac_and_con @folklore @folklorethursday It's an (as yet) unpublished variant of the Norwegian folktale, The Three Princesses of Hvittenland.
