Thinking of moving to Melbourne soon, can anyone give me a rundown of what it's like to rent there?
Ha ha ha ...... Best of luck! You'll need it. Also get on the reddit r/melbourne sub - plenty of comments on rentals there.
Seriously, I haven't rented since 2018, but the current situation varies between appalling and even more appalling.
To rent:
If you're a dual objectively high income earning couple (e.g $300k+) with no pets, no kids, and non smokers, expect to have significant trouble being accepted anywhere remotely decent and appropriate as somebody will beat you.
If you're single, high earning, you can get away with a 1 bed CBD apartment or move to the dead docklands.
If you're single, low income / minimum wage, expect to be living in a share house or maybe in the middle of no where.
You'll have queues and competition for pretty much everywhere.
It's really shit. Expect a lot of pain, frustration, and trauma. You'll need to invest a lot of time. I can't stress the time aspect enough. It's gonna suck.
Sorry, replying to my own message.
Also don't get settled when you find somewhere, as the rent will go up, or you'll get a notice that your rental provider is selling the property.
Which means 2 inspections per week for upto 15 minutes for as long as it takes to sell.
It's not great at the moment, but it's better than Sydney!!!
Which doesn't say much...
Try looking for places that are a little out of the way because demand is pretty strong at the moment. Even if you have the money, the units aren't always there
