Because both you and the article are taking it out of context. The 10% chance refers to general AI (referred to as advance AI in the article), not chatGPT. Also, the actual statistics is 50% of AI safety researchers believe there is a 10% or greater chance humans go extinct from being unable to control AI. It's something meant for the future, not current development.
