Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Why are Linux, Windows uppercase? Where is macOS? Why is iOS lowercase?

    [–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Apple's preferred spelling is that macOS and iOS not be capitalized, much like xkcd. But yeah, now that you mention it, that just says 'ios'.

    Darn lazy memers

It was always pretty humorous to me that Microsoft named its early-2000s mobile operating system "Windows Compact Edition" and abbreviated it (officially) as "WinCE". The capitalization really mattered in this case.

I had the same question. The author didn't seem to employ the scientific rigor to call things by their correct names. It's as if they're treating it like spelling in a meme.

treating it like spelling in a meme

Is spelling things correctly in memes substantially harder than elsewhere?

    [–] KazuchijouNo@lemy.lol 0 points 1 week ago

Not really, but it is less rigurous and hardly ever enforced

iOS is lowercase for two reasons:

    • Naming consistency. Since they are already name it iPhone, might as well name the OS the same way.
    • The name was already in use. This may have not been as significant for choosing the name of Apple's OS, but when the first iPhone released, Cisco IOS was already a family of operating systems for routers and network switches, and the Wii had already released a few months before, and they also called the console's operating system(s) as IOS.

Pretty sure they're talking about why the meme says, 'WINDOWS', 'LINUX', and 'ios'.

    [–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’m talking about β€œios” in the meme, not the properly stylized β€œiOS.”

Oops... I misunderstood the question then...
