No way this passes. If it does I imagine WhatsApp will withdraw from the market and people will hop to session/matrix/element/signal or jailbreak.

they failed ton of times but it only takes once for them to win. i don't see how this does not pass a some point. it is a question of when imho

Faceberg will comply also, why wouldnt he, he makes money either way.

Loss in global trust. If the EU app scans people’s messages people will just say they’re probably doing it for everyone. They also risk losing their near-global dominance if all their tech savvy users pick a new home and trigger a chain reaction bringing everyone with them. Next thing you the rest of the world starts ditching WhatsApp for a superior alternative (which predominantly just lack users currently)

This would be interesting to observe if it actually played out, but I think we're underestimating user inertia here, looking at how many people still use WhatsApp / Telegram over Signal, or Reddit over Lemmy ... apathy is strong in these times

Who, WhatsApp? They've fought via the legal system to retain privacy a few times.
