At least in some places, pigtails are very strongly coded as being "this is a child," so their use for waifus can come off as creepy.

Yeah, there are definitely some forms of pigtails or "twintails" that I think are very child coded and should be avoided when that would be inappropriate, but I'm just saying that there's really a very broad range of hairstyles which could all be described as pulling one's hair back into two tails on either side of one's head, and I just can't really imagine someone genuinely and universally hating every single one. For that matter it's only just inferred from context that we're talking about designs of "anime waifus" to begin with, even though that part wasn't actually specified. So I was thinking like, "Is he talking about real people, too? Is he also including child characters? Is this only about characters in an anime style?" etc.
