Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Where did the deadly sins come from anyway? And why aren't they the same as the commandments?

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The 7 deadly sins are very loosely based on a few of the 10 commandments, but were created by Gnostics in like the 200s AD.

Pride: Bearing false witness? Greed: No Stealing? Wrath: No murder? Envy: Coveting your neighbor's wife? Lust: Coveting your neighbor's wife? Gluttony: -- Sloth: --

So really they're just kinda their own thing that the Gnostics/Catholics came up with for confessionals.

Gluttony and Sloth aren't linked to any commandments, but are likely added to target Epicurians/Hedonists/Materialists. Honestly most of them are reactionary positions against the more agnostic philosophies of Greek and Roman philosophers.

It's the guidebook for being a reactionary cult in the collapsing Roman empire.

I've heard a few different people argue that all of them are really just pride/greed. Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth are just Greed in different "areas" of life. Wrath and Pride are more similar, but could be seen as either Greed itself, or as a reaction to greed. Like, wrath as a protective reaction to one's greed, and pride as a reaction once greed has been achieved.

I think one of them even suggested its all pride, as Christianity largely sees pride as the #1 sin. To me it makes sense, because a medieval peasant could run this show better then god at this point. If the poors think they're better then the dumbass running the show, they might do something. Make even the thought of replacing god a crime and you got a self controlling populace.

In traditional Catholic views Pride is actually closer to blasphemy/apostasy than anything else. By taking "pride" in your accomplishments you reject the alternative: thanking God. You're tacitly saying God wasn't involved. You pair that up with the idea that all non-Christian religion is rooted in primordial satanic trickery. You get the idea that pride is akin to rejecting God and doing self worship because you aren't worshipping God and being humble. Satan is everywhere God isn't. But Satan can only be where God isn't and being unholy is doing bad so Satan only really exists in bad choices people make and not acknowledging the primacy of God in all things is a bad choice and therefore the sin of pride.

Gotcha. I was ready to blame the Gnostics, felt like something they'd do.

What I was taught is that they're pre-sins, like pre-diabetes. If you're on a sinful path and don't change course, your lifestyle will lead you to sin. So lustful people will eventually cheat if they're not corrected, greedy people will steal, etc.

So basically thought crime but for God

The pre-sins aren't full sins until you break an actual rule. The point is to straighten people out when they're at the stage of giving bad vibes and red flags, before they've done anything serious.

But also yeah pretty much. It's Catholicism lol
