I was absent the last two nights, but things are back to normal now; I will be there tonight. For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is State of Siege (1972), a French-language thriller from renowned Greek auteur Costa-Gavras about the US-backed regime in Uruguay’s fashy crackdown on the communist guerrilla rebels. The insurgents capture a Usian torture specialist and give him some of his own medicine, their interrogation forming the frame by which they recount the history of the struggle against the Uruguayan regime. We previously watched Gavras’ similar Z (1969), which centered on Greek fascism. This is considered one of his best films, so let’s check it out.

After that is Local Hero (1983), a British satirical comedy about an American businessman (Burt Lancaster) sent by an oil billionaire to buy up a refinery in a remote Scottish village. He finds it full of strange characters who will not let him negotiate the terms how he wants, and seem interested in almost anything else. Hilarity ensues. Oh yeah, and a young Peter Capaldi is there too. Director is Bill Forsyth, who is otherwise best-known for the similarly offbeat Housekeeping (1987), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this one.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
