I don't believe this. Elon is doing a performance. Doge was never about reducing government spending. That was all a lie. Doge was intended to gut welfare programs and government services as much as possible, regardless of whether it saved money for the government.
The "big beautiful bill" is going to give massive tax cuts to Elon Musk. The alleged reason why Musk is against the bill is that the bill is expected to increase the US National Deficit. The bill reduces taxes on the ultra wealthy and increases military spending. Republicans do not care about the US National Deficit. If they cared about the National Deficit, they would not reduce taxes because reducing taxes increases the National Deficit. Republicans only claim that they care about the deficit as an abstraction for cutting government services. Elon is only saying he hates the bill to pretend that Doge was a legitimate operation. It wasn't. He doesn't actually hate the bill.
This is all a performance.
