I woke up to my alarm, checked the weather, and atop the page in bold red: Breaking- trump targets (school in my area). I've already seen my town listed in another article last week because my state has sanctuary cities, I didn't even know we were one. My son's school is mostly Spanish speaking folks.

That headline had me in a panic. Especially because the article just said "targeted". Targeted how? Cutting funding for one town? Sending ICE? Wtf does that mean.

I check my States subreddit (the only place I still lurk) and nothing. I was afraid to send him to school this morning.

Not to mention the shootings that can happen, that's always in the back of my head, but now this too? I can't wait until this year is over, and I cannot believe I am beginning to consider homeschooling from fear something could happen to my son in school :(

If that's the case, it's possible I've communicated poorly. The overall sentiment should be:

  • Don't Panic. Seriously, panicking almost always results in poor decisions.
  • Discern the threat model from all available intel.
  • Plan accordingly.

I hope I didn't come across as a dick to you, btw, as I do share the sentiment you seem to be espousing, believe it or not, including your original contention of the media sensationalizing things... But it seems it's always the wrong things anymore, at least, doesn't it? Panic about just the entirely wrong things, instead of what we should very clearly be concerned about.

Anyway, my apologies again if I contributed to any undue stress or bad feelings or what-have-you... I just want to see everybody home safe and happy at the end of the day, and it honestly breaks my heart a little bit to know that we now have a government in America that isn't the slightest bit concerned with even giving lip service to that ideal.

No worries, shit happens. As long as I was able to drill them through quelling their panic and evaluating the threat, I did my part.

You'd be surprised how universal this skill is, and conversely, his easily a panicked person can be coerced into a decision that benefits a bad actor. Look over some of the banking and computer scams that come from India, I guarantee most will hinge on keeping the target panicked and not thinking clearly.
