I wish Signal was as popular. Or that Matrix was as user-friendly.

The problem we have is trying to get our friends to jump ship to a new alternative. Pretty much any barrier, even small, prevents people from doing this because they already have a working app that does what they need.

trying to get our friends to jump ship to a new alternative

People keep saying this, but the problem is even those who know better keep Whatsapp installed alongside Signal. Trying means leaving Zuckerberg's messenger and notifying your friends you're only on Signal from now on. I did that and even my pre-boomer parents now use Signal.

they already have a working app that does what they need.

Not if they need to contact me.

Worked well for me. Although all the people I care about had already Signal, Element or Threema installed, so I am not a great pull factor.

And those everyday moms from child care or from wherever can reach me via SMS, for the two messages/year.

[–] jamescrakemerani@feddit.uk 2 points 2 weeks ago

Hmm perhaps I should try this then.

WhatsApp has some conveniences for me such as easy access to data. As far as I know most messengers hide data in some private location and allow limited access with great difficulty. Last I checked to save media from a chat I had to go to each media and select export manually.

Matrix is slowly getting there.

They need to combat the insane spam problem before they can truly take off.

[–] who@feddit.org 5 points 2 weeks ago

In the past 5 years of using Matrix, I have received exactly 2 direct spam messages, and seen maybe 5-10 in public rooms. (There have been none in my private chats, of course.) If you're seeing much more, I guess it must depend on how you use it and what rooms you join.

Its an electron app, how hard can it even be?

[–] Ste41th@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago

Ngl I’m becoming successful at convincing people I meet to message me on signal if they ever need me and I’m not there

[–] evident5051@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As a user of both iOS and Android, that would greatly inconvenience me due to the lack of multi-device compatibility.

[–] underline960@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I'm pretty sure Matrix has both iOS and Android clients.

[–] who@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

Yep. A bunch of them.

GP's complaint must have been about Signal.

[–] evident5051@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

Oh I was referring to Signal 😅
