This makes me even more wary of my charging habits, maybe some of them only work due to me plugging them in correctly all the time. What if the connector is actually only making a really poor contact and getting hot?

That shouldn't be an issue, the devices can regulate down the power to safe levels.

The device is aware of the connector temperature specifically?

Battery monitoring, sure, but I wasn't aware connector monitoring, at least as a standard practice in phones etc
