I really dislike Tuta for their refusal to support SMTP/IMAP and PGP, let alone CalDAV or CardDAV. Posteo's approach is way better.
Is this not a deal breaker for, like, everyone?
Web apps.
For reference I work for a competing mail provider and the majority of our users don't use SMTP or IMAP, instead exclusively using the web app.
or the app app lol. Tuta has apps on all platforms.
Personally never had to use either protocol, what's your use case? - genuinely curios.
Using Thunderbird as opposed to tuta's quite barebones client:
Not to mention other external QoL functionalities like a home assistant tablet being able to display a family calendar and being able to automate based off of events
Defo some good points here that I had not thought of, am too used to using webclients. Though Tuta does have an mail import feature.
Tuta's discount is tempting, but I've also seen StartMail doing 50% off lately. Definitely feels like a good time to test a couple out, especially if you care more about UX than just encryption.
Sadly, no calendar on startmail which is a non-starter for getting my family on it.
Seems to be nothing really with mail + calendar + encryption + IMAP from a smaller company.
Not sure if it's encrypted,b but mailbox.org has email + calendar + I can add it to K-9 and Geary (so I think it does support IMAP?)?
Nice! I am thinking either mailbox.org or posteo. They have IMAP. They support pgp indeed it seems. One of those might be a winner!
Have you already tested it out?
I have been using mailbox's light (1โฌ/month) tier, which doesn't include the calendar, so I can't really tell you about its quality.
What I can tell you though, is that it has worked great with K-9 and Geary and everyone I have emailed has recieved it and it hasn't gone to any spam folders or such.
How do you use email without SMTP/IMAP?
That's ridiculous!
Posteo has no custom domain support, deal breaker for me. As far as I understand they don't support IMAP in order to keep their encryption working, and I believe others like Proton do the same thing. Since their webapp is good and they even have an official client on Fdroid, I don't think it's a big deal
For people who want custom domain support, as well as SMTP/IMAP, but still euro-based, Nubo may be more what you're looking for if you're OK with dealing with a newer company.
Oh, wow. Didn't realize Tuta didn't work with IMAP/POP/SMTP. https://tuta.com/support/howto#imap
That's pretty cool, haven't heard of this service before. The website is a little light on technical details but I do like the co-op model.
Not sure what they're running for email, but for the other cloud services, I think they just run Nextcloud?
https://doc.nubo.coop/en/settings/linux/#cloud
They do, yeah, and the email is RoundCube from memory? I have a personal Nextcloud and really can't fault them for using it in place of building Yet Another in-house drive solution - it's good software, bront.
Just started a test subscription with posteo... I'm rather disappointed they don't allow to view the email previews in vertical columns. Their layout is horizontal only and can't be changed. It's a very small pet peeve, but i wasn't expecting not being able to change that :(
What do you use smtp/imap for?
Email apps.
