Price anchoring. The marketing trick in which sellers put some random, high number as the "regular" price or MSRP, so the offer price seems like a deal.

Yeah. They get away with this due to our non-existent consumer protection laws. Should be a disclaimer showing the lowest price in 30 or 90 days with the date on it next to the "sale" price.
