Can't say I'm that surprised. Proton always had bad vibes for me and has been the "secure" email of choice of chuds for years.

I've used it for several years and I'm looking to move off of it. Its still better than Gmail, but they made a donation to Bellingcat in the past through a community vote and seek out places for their VPN service where the government "subverts democracy" like Hong Kong. They've always been ran by libertarian techbros.

The only other good alternative seems to be Tuta though and as petty as it is, I'm not going to be giving people an email address that ends in Tuta or Tutamail, especially verbally.
