Breadtube if it didn't suck.

Post videos you genuinely enjoy and want to share, duh. Celebrate the diversity of interests shared by chapochatters by posting a deep dive into Venetian kelp farming, I dunno. Also media criticism, bite-sized versions of left-wing theory, all the stuff you expected. But I am curious about that kelp farming thing now that you mentioned it.

Low effort / spam videos might be removed, especially weeb content.

There is a cytube that you can paste videos into and watch with whoever happens to be around. It's open submission unless there's something important to commandeer it with at the time.

A weekly watch party happens every Saturday (Sunday down under), with video nominations Saturday-Monday, voting Monday-Thursday. See the pin for whatever stage it's currently in.

My problem is that I keep skimming random bits so I know a little about a lot lol

Managed to get through a bit of Capital in order though. The charts actually help.

i read the first few pages months ago and have not gone further since it was so dense.

i learned elsewhere either here or lemmygrad that there are accompanying materials like those charts so i'll try again after i finish parenti and the black panthers since their stuff is so much easier to understand as a lazy american.

My problem is the "Germanisms" Marx uses in Kapital. There's compound words that are difficult to parse, for example. I've wondered if German versions are easier to understand for German speakers?

Example from chapter 1 of volume 1:

The utility of a thing makes it a use value. But this utility is not a thing of air. Being limited by the physical properties of the commodity, it has no existence apart from that commodity. A commodity, such as iron, corn, or a diamond, is therefore, so far as it is a material thing, a use value, something useful. This property of a commodity is independent of the amount of labour required to appropriate its useful qualities. When treating of use value, we always assume to be dealing with definite quantities, such as dozens of watches, yards of linen, or tons of iron.

This is really easy to understand, in very simple terms. But then we get to section 2:

To resume, then: In the use value of each commodity there is contained useful labour, i.e., productive activity of a definite kind and exercised with a definite aim. Use values cannot confront each other as commodities, unless the useful labour embodied in them is qualitatively different in each of them. In a community, the produce of which in general takes the form of commodities, i.e., in a community of commodity producers, this qualitative difference between the useful forms of labour that are carried on independently of individual producers, each on their own account, develops into a complex system, a social division of labour.

He uses "community" and "commodity" multiple times in one paragraph with multiple run-on sentences and probably more commas than is legally allowed in the state of Vermont. It's a very "Anglish" way of speaking, which makes sense if you're German (like Marx), but my native English speaker brain wants different words and punctuation for this to make sense.

it reminded me of my difficulty in reading cervantes. i remember thinking that a light hearted book would be an easy way to teach myself antiquated spanish; but his heavy use of runon sentences and punctuation like you described for marx made it a much heavier read that i was anticipating.

i didn't get any of the jokes until i gave up half way through and switched to a more modern mexican adaptation of it and then it became enjoyable. likewise parenti and the black panthers are becoming my modern adaptation of marx.
