My kids have watched anime for years, but I recently learned that their favorite is Scout Regiment. I’ve never followed any of this before and I’m trying to figure out the best way I can try and learn more (search results are overwhelming!) so I can randomly drop some comments that catch them by surprise.

Can anyone give a noob some pointers?

How old are your kids? Attack on titan is great, but so gory.
It's not a bad place to start but there are plenty of anime to watch. You might like some of the older stuff first like Trigun.

I personally get all my family into anime by showing them Hayayo Miyazaki movies like my neighbor Totoro, spirited away, castle in the sky, ponyo, howls moving castle.

Check out good places to start on Google. Find an anime that went for 1 or 2 seasons. Find genres you'll enjoy.

My wife loves mysteries so she like detective Conan.. not a small anime by any means. I like fighting so I watch dragon ball z, bleach, Naruto.
